After being truly challenged, moved, and inspired by the movie Invictus<\/em>, the list below includes what I would consider to be the key lessons.<\/p>\n

  1. Leaders must first learn to lead themselves<\/u>. Leaders cannot avoid going through tough times, and often they will be required to go through these times alone.\u00a0 Leaders must have strategies to lead themselves.\u00a0 \u201cJust words.\u00a0 But they helped me to stand up when I wanted to lie down.\u201d<\/li>\n
  2. Leaders must learn to forgive<\/u>. An attitude of unforgiveness and bitterness can only create a self-centered and self-absorbed focus.\u00a0 It is only from a position of forgiveness that we can truly focus on others and be effective leaders.\u00a0 \u201cForgiveness starts here too.\u00a0 Forgiveness liberates the soul.\u00a0 It removes fear.\u00a0 That is why it is such a powerful weapon.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cWe have to surprise them with compassion, with restraint, with generosity.\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 All of the things they denied us.\u201d<\/li>\n
  3. Leaders must be prepared to learn from others<\/u>. This includes opening our minds to the possibility of learning from anyone and everyone.\u00a0 In a climate charged with racial and political tensions Francois could have chosen to decline the invitation to have tea with the President\u2013 he did not.\u00a0 And he demonstrates a willingness to listen and learn in every interaction.<\/li>\n
  4. Leaders must recognize when to follow<\/u>.\u00a0 When the team received the news that they would be required to complete coaching clinics while preparing for the World Cup, the majority of the team was resistant.\u00a0 Francois recognized that this was not the time to lead, but to follow.\u00a0 \u201cTimes change.\u00a0 And we need to change as well.\u201d<\/li>\n
  5. Leaders must have courage in the face of opposition<\/u>. This is particularly difficult amongst team members, but no less important.\u00a0 President Mandela was prepared to oppose his own countrymen at the risk of losing his support and popularity.\u00a0 Francois openly challenged his teammates to learn the South Africa national anthem, and to do the coaching clinics without question.\u00a0 \u201cThe day I am afraid to do that is the day I am no longer fit to lead.\u201d\u00a0 (Mandela\u2019s response to the accusation:\u00a0 \u201cYou are risking your future as our leader.\u201d)<\/li>\n
  6. Leaders must accept that their influence is far-reaching<\/u>. All leaders are role models, and have influence beyond their immediate positions that needs to be recognized and used for the common good.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019ve become more than just a rugby team.\u00a0 And we might as well get used to it.\u201d<\/li>\n
  7. Leaders empower others to become better than they think they can be<\/u>. Leaders can see the potential in individuals, teams, and organizations and then have the ability to create that vision and capacity.\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cBecause in order to build our nation, we must all exceed our expectations.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Truly an inspiring movie based on a true story I would encourage every current and future leader to watch Invictus.<\/em><\/p>\n
