My experience has predominantly been that often leaders start as being emergent leaders and after it is evident that they hold influence in a particular group, they then become assigned leaders. This is how I gained the assigned role of being on our Leadership Team. I was well connected to the staff, I advocated on their behalf to leadership about various issues, and I proposed solutions to some of those issues. Through this I “emerged” as a leader. After a period of time where I was functioning as an emergent leader, I was then assigned a role as a leader.

As I read this chapter I learned that although I can and do function as a leader, I am far more comfortable, and inclined, towards functioning as a manager. “The overriding function of management is to provide order and consistency to organizations, whereas the primary function of leadership is to produce change and movement” (Northouse, 2016, p. 13). Managers are the people who create systems, processes and policy manuals; leaders are the people who drive innovation, create new vision and give direction.

As I looked at the organization I work with I realized that there are a lot of leaders, but not a lot of managers. While it would be great to have more managers, I do not think that either approach is more essential for an organization to prosper. There needs to be a balance between both managers and leaders. “To be effective, organizations need to nourish both competent management and skilled leadership” (Northouse, 2016, p. 13).

How can an organization that is unbalanced begin to value both the management and leadership approach in order to become more effective?

References:

Northouse, P.
