She gave a clear picture of how the role of both the leader and the follower in this process. The leader’s role is to continue the process and hold followers to account, but the followers must also take responsibility for their own growth. I have had the privilege of being a follower under a leader who understands the process in this way and gave space for me to grow. That experience not only gave me a sense of accomplishment when the goal was reached, but it also created a fierce loyalty in me towards that leader. Taking the time to lead out of process is part of what creates loyalty in followers.

In a traditional understanding of the word power I absolutely agree with Dawn “that a leader needs to demonstrate power when they have no relational equity with their followers.” However, when a leader practices servant leadership they “should make every attempt to share their power and enable others to grow and become autonomous” (Northouse, 2016, p. 239). I would propose that as a leader shares their power with followers they gain relational equity with followers, which leads to a different kind of power; they gain loyalty.

Loyalty can greatly increase the leaders influence on followers, can help build team morale, can increase a team’s effectiveness by creating buy in and can hold a team together through turbulent times. In this sense, loyalty becomes a kind of power the leader holds. It is not a domineering kind of power; rather it is a humble kind of power. Gaining this kind of power comes at a risk to the leader because they first must share the power they currently hold. Is this risk worth it? Is it worth it in some situations but not in others?

References:

Northouse, P. G. (2016). Leadership: Theory and practice, Seventh Edition.
