Northouse (2016) lists empathy as a characteristic of servant leaders. In order to exhibit empathy, a certain amount of emotional intelligence is required making it a crucial skill for any leader, especially one desiring to lead as a servant leader. As a whole, we may not value emotional intelligence as much as we perhaps should given its importance. Tracy says that emotional intelligence “is often overlooked, yet crucial for success as a business leader” (2017).

Personally, I have found that focusing on technical skills, rather than emotional intelligence, can be tempting as a leader because they are more clearly measurable. Measuring emotional intelligence can be far more complicated as there are numerous definitions of emotional intelligence. Mittal and Sindhu argue that there are multiple “emotional intelligences” we should be measuring (2012). This brings up the question of how a leader knows which emotional intelligence they should be measuring.

In the midst of valuing emotional intelligence it is also important that we remember “emotional intelligence alone does not guarantee good leadership” (Mittal & Sindhu, 2012). Jamie did a good job of articulating that leaders need both skills as well as emotional intelligence in order to be effective. This served as a good reminder to me that finding that balance is important. I have noticed in progressing through this course that finding a balance between the different models, competencies, traits and skills seems to be tantamount to being an effective leader.

References:

Mittal, V. & Sindhu, E.
