It seems that Roosevelt, whether implicitly or explicitly understood the importance of these characteristics. He listened and heard the concerns of the American people, and in his address empathized with them in those concerns, which is why “he spoke to the fear in the hearts of the people” (Morrow, 2018, para. 1).

Through this Roosevelt successfully “revived the confidence of the common man in his country and his government” (Watson, 1951, p. 130). He functioned as a leader through inspiring and energizing (Northouse, 2016) the American people, and establishing a direction for the nation through articulating a vision (Northouse, 2016) of the United States of America enduring the hardships of the great depression (Watson, 1951).

Ryan, your reminder to yourself at the end of your post is a good reminder for me as well. I also need to “ensure part o my practice is that people are both seen and heard as a means of carrying out my vision as a leader” (Morrow, 2018, para. 3). I wonder if you have practical strategies to do this that might also benefit me as I look at my own practice?

References:

Morrow, R. (2018, October 29).
