As, it involves experience, knowledge, memories, comman sense which an adult gains during his growing age from a child. Being a student till now I have never experienced as an adult learner except taking a few lessons and seminars in front of my colleague, but the experience I gain as an adult learner is amazing. If I recall all the changes I got, I found myself to be really transformed, I found a level of maturity, a level of understanding and a sense of knowing people more clearly.

As mentioned in notes of unit 6 Knowles Malcolm, the foundational thinker of andragogy outlines six assumptions about andragogy:

“As a person matures, his or her self-concept moves from that of a dependent personality toward one of a self-directing human being”. This is so true, initially I as a child was dependent on my parents, I used to take all my decisions after asking them and used to work as they command without thinking twice, I have never thought of doing anything by myself but as the time changes and I explore the world, get to know more people and came out of the caring circle of my parents, I started taking decisions of my life, started thinking of what to do things in my way . This is because I found concepts in my decision and agenda behind them that tells me that I am doing right and helps me to take my decision.

An adult accumulates a growing reservoir of experience, which is a rich resource for learning.

Experience is not a stage or a knowledge, it is a process which takes time. A fruit nurtures from a seed to become a fruit. The same way a child nurtures through experiences in life and turns into a mature person. These experiences provide a lot of knowledge regarding judgement, regarding knowing people and many more which is actually a rich source of learning.

The readiness of an adult to learn is closely related to the developmental tasks of his or her social role.

For an adult to explore the world, to know more, to experience more, to learn more, it is necessary to have at least basic access to social environment. As mentioned in the notes of unit 6 For learning to be transformative and effective it needs to be job-embedded, ongoing and with built-in follow-up/support. The most effective type of professional development for lasting change is not a one-time workshop. Traditional stand-and-deliver professional development is generally conducted with minimal transfer. Rather, effective professional development is an ongoing supportive relationship with follow up and mentorship (Hui, Snider, Couture, 2016; Katz, 2013; Klinger, Volante & DeLuca, 2012).

There is a change in time perspective as people mature – from future application of knowledge to immediacy of application. Thus, an adult is more problem than subject centered in learning.

It is so true, as in the developing society people are getting more changed now, their thoughts, Their view of changing the society, their ideas are all together different from the prevailing adults and it is necessary for the growth to develop new ideas and new agendas with time. this is why author mentioned “an adult is more problem than subject centered in learning”

Adults are mostly driven by internal motivation, rather than external motivators.

People around us never want good of others and used to discourage at each and every position of life, they used to pretend as best in front but worst at your back. Other people used to demotivate and used to show themselves superior than others, this can affect adults as I experienced but the inner sense of courage, will power and self motivation is what helps you to boost your inner sense and helps to achieve goal n life.

Adults need to know the reason for learning something. (Merriam & Bierma, 2014, p. 47)

During the development phase as a medical student I found myself transformed in my learning process, earlier in my school days I used to learn because I have to give exams and attempt best in them, I just learn to spill all in the exams and never thought of why, which I came to know when I entered college life and used to ask myself why for every question or for every answer I started asking why and how this happened. It became necessary for me now to know the reason of everything which I am doing which is a basic necessity of gaining experience and learning in life.

References :

Hui, C., Snider, L., & Couture, M.
