{"id":109,"date":"2018-02-21T22:38:19","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T22:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/?p=109"},"modified":"2018-02-21T22:38:19","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T22:38:19","slug":"bird-of-the-week-the-brolga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/2018\/02\/21\/bird-of-the-week-the-brolga\/","title":{"rendered":"Bird of the week &#8211; the brolga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">This week\u2019s bird of the week is the brolga. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Last Saturday I was exploring a wetland bird sanctuary called \u201cFivebough Wetlands\u201d which is situated in and among cow pastures near the town of Leeton, New South Wales, Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-110 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_1-1024x555.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_1-1024x555.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_1-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_1-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_1.jpg 1493w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">The cows looked interesting too, so I took a picture. To my wonder and surprise, large birds called brolgas \u2013 a species I was on the lookout for \u2013 were in the picture, walking among the cows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Brolga and cows\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aBZI6sj3NHU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Brolgas are obviously a relative of the whooping cranes and sandhill cranes we are familiar with in North America. Like those well-known birds, they are quite unusual, and unique to Australia.\u00a0They are a\u00a0little more common than\u00a0North American\u00a0white cranes though \u2013 they can apparently be seen flocking in the hundreds in some places.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-111 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_2.jpg 791w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_2-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Brolga_2-768x290.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">So the lesson the brolga left me with was, pay careful attention to your surroundings. The brolga can be a meter and half tall or so as you see in my photos.
