It is not a plane. It is not a fox. It is a flying fox!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-63 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-1-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-1-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-1-768x619.jpg 768w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-1.jpg 795w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These birds (I mean bats) weight about 1 kilo and have a wingspan of a meter or so, and have been a great spectacle for us to watch here in Brisbane, as they fly up the river near our lodgings in the evening, flying up from wherever they camp. In the daytime they camp in great numbers in trees. Hundreds of them fly up the river and then spread out in search of food\u2026after the bird hour, comes the bat hour!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-2-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-2-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-2-768x535.jpg 768w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-2.jpg 837w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Come evening they seek out their food &#8212; which is primarily pollen but also fruit sometimes. How do they seek these things by echolocation, Deb and I wondered? How might a blind bat find what it needs in the trees, we wondered, as we watch one land in a tree just a few meters away?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-66 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-4-300x206.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-4-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-4.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The answer is\u00a0that\u00a0they find what they need just as you and I would find flowers, using a good sense of smell and a good pair of eyes &#8211; yes they can see! Except of course, we can&#8217;t fly so we don&#8217;t have access to the great number of trees they do.<\/p>\n<p>This ability to fly is of great benefit to the trees they pollinate which have flowers that open at night. In fact, they fly many kilometers every night conducting their pollinator service.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-65 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-3-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-3-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-3-768x444.jpg 768w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-3-1024x592.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/clements\/files\/2018\/02\/Flying-fox-3.jpg 1885w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And to watch them fly is quite a thrill. We are used to our &#8220;little brown bats&#8221; in North America but these bats look a bit more Pterosaur-like flapping along like a bat on a mission with their one meter wing spans.
