I also liked the progression your order of importance followed, from the importance of practice, to starting out and eventually advancing in practice.

I particularly liked two statements in your blog. The first is the term itself “The Intelligence of Practice”. Like you said, it says all you need to know. It says a lot in only four words and it made me immediately think of the “The 10,000 hour rule” (Gladwell, 2008, p. 35) which is regarded by some as the amount of time one needs to become an expert at a chosen skill.

In nursing, we are to be competent to practice at a novice level, as we have standards of care set by our regulatory body. Over time, we refine our intelligence of practice and move from novice, to advanced, to proficient and then to expert nurse status in a given field. We continue to build on our competencies as we grow our intuition and intelligence. Through this process, we are shaping our own style of practice as we find meaning to what we find is most important to us.

I also particularly liked the expression, “Practice builds intuition; reflection on practice builds judgment” (Cahalan, 2017,p. 121). Reflection is a strategy used in nursing to stimulate critical thinking and is a skill I try to apply on a regular basis.

To answer you question, I don’t have enough experience to frame it in your church leader context, so I will apply it a healthcare setting. I think there are definitely traits that some people already have which enables these skills to come naturally than others. I am a firm believer in finding your calling in nursing, since there are so many different specialities. I have seen new nurses really thrive once they get to a particular field, which allows them to grow and take up leadership roles much faster.

Thanks,
Daneen

References:

Cahalan, K.,Foley, E. and G.
