Three characteristics that stand out in Spears (2010) are listening, awareness and conceptualization.

Listening is an essential component of communication and effective decision making. A leader that listens will acquire the knowledge of project objectives and desired outcomes, as well as build relationships with group members. The leader who has strong listening skills is “receptive to what is being said and unsaid” (Spears, 2010, p. 27), responds appropriately to others and can clarify the needs of the groups. Without the ability of a leader to listen, communication becomes ineffective. This results in decision-making being one-sided and missing valuable group input. Listening is a servant leader characteristic that when applied by a leader can enhance a groups effectiveness by building morale and commitment, which in turn will bring a project to fruition to fulfil organizational goals.

Awareness in the team leader “helps one in understanding issues involving ethics, power, and values” (Spears, 2010, p. 27). It gives the leader insight into how the concept of power is viewed by the group and how it effects collaboration. Awareness in a leader implies that they are attuned to the values of others within the group and through this recognition, the needs and values are incorporated into decisions making processes. Without the group feeling unified, success is hindered as there is a lack of commitment and shared purpose for project goals and completion. To emphasize the important of awareness by a leader “being able to view most situations from a more integrated, holistic position” (Spears, 2010, p. 27) enables for deeper understanding of the groups needs and supports appropriate action to be taken to achieve effective performance. The Hill Model for Team Leadership alludes to the idea that without awareness, a leader will not see the multifaceted problems that a team can experience. This in turn, will inhibit performance because the leader can not diagnose the problem correctly and choose the appropriate action to take (Northouse, 2018).

Lastly, the characteristic of conceptualization implies, the ability to look at a problem or an organization beyond the day-to-day realities to achieve both short-term and long-term goals (Spears, 2010). Why this is important for a leader in a group project to possess is because there are many phases of project implementation. If the leader is focused on just the day-to-day realities and not the process in getting to the end goal, issues can arise. For instance, important details that may pose a risk for potential problems could surface or considerations for project improvements, missed. A leader that is able to conceptualize will provide the group with the skills and insight needed to reach project benchmarks throughout each phase of execution, as well as be able to detect and refocus a project if required.

Daneen

Question to group:
Is it possible for a leader to use the characteristic of ‘healing’, as described in Spears (2010) in a group project setting?

References

Northouse, P.
