Hassan is in Africa, currently working as a Youth and Men’s Pastor at Christian Life Assembly. Despite the eight-hour time difference, we were able to communicate and get to know each other, although not as much as I would have liked due to the time difference and life commitments. Through our interaction I was able to gain insight into who he is, and I can say with certainty that Hassan is a leader motivated to create change.

As a Pastor, Hassan is a leader of God and he works hard to impact the lives of others. In his current role, as a Youth and Men’s Pastor, he shared with me that he is at his best “when my contribution in the church transforms a life” (personal communication, 2018). He has contributed positively to shaping the future by focusing on helping youth and young adults. A recent example of this is that he recently organized a young professionals’ summit which had a great turnout and brought together numerous young, educated individuals to discuss “how they can serve the places of work with excellence and diligence” (personal communication, 2018). I am impressed with not only getting such a motivated group together, but to focus on how they can make a difference and be better in their own circles is what stands out to me.

To be effective in his role as a Pastor, Hassan possesses a strong skill set based on communication, emotional intelligence, good listening and sound counsel. In his role, we decided to focus on arguably the most important skill mentioned above, communication. The first thing that stood out was when I asked Hassan about several ways he uses communication is his role. One of those was to provide “emotional and psychosocial support for patient, families and staff (Interdisciplinary team members)” (personal communication, 2018). I could immediately relate to my own work with that answer, and I know how challenging that can be at times. The second point that I took away was from when I asked Hassan about when he is effective as a communicator and one of his answers was when people he leads remember what counsel he gave them months after the fact. This spoke to his quality as a communicator, but also as a leader, that he can have such a lasting effect on the people he cares for.

To finish this quick introduction, Hassan’s five year goal is one of his most impressive aspects. He wants to be effect change and develop leaders through his role in the Church. He aspires to set up a leadership training institution to equip leaders with the capabilities to serve their nations on a global scale. This plan is very admirable and challenging, yet I find it inspiring. His passion “to enhance the capacity of the human capital in Rwanda by raising and equipping leaders ” (personal communication, 2018) says so much about his character and is a lasting memory I have in getting to know this leader.

FOLLOW UP
After reflecting on our correspondence and thinking how I can provide some coaching support for Hassan in his future endeavors’ I leave him with these two questions: What do you see as your biggest challenge?; and what will it take to move your dream forward?

Daneen

INTRODUCTION It speaks to the quality and uniqueness of this program that I got to interview a leader who is a very long way away from where I am.
