My Leadership story

Hi all,

 

My leadership story on how I was inspired by my aunt Swapna to choose my profession and how I have developed the leadership skills are narrated shortly. I hope you will enjoy my story!!!

Below is the story to be read instead of hearing..

No one is born  a leader, he or she develops the leadership skills in a course of time. Some of them might have attained the skills with thorough learning and observation. Some might have developed based on the situation.  We all wish to be good in others’ perspective and we often try to do for others around, rather doing for self. This is just because we are human, and we love appreciation and motivation. Everyone thinks if I just call myself a leader, I won’t be a leader, but if the ones who are around me and observe me gives me that title, then I am. But the fact is that, if an individual has a serious urge to put his heart and mind into anything that brings out a positive or negative impact, is a leader. That is the reason why there are leaders with bad and good intentions and it’s all in the eyes of people who perceive it and gives them the title leader. And if a person is considered as a leader at least in the eyes of one or two then he/ she becomes a true leader.

Being a very active child since childhood, first born child to my parents and first-born grand child to my grand parents in a typical south Indian large family, I was pampered a lot and on the other hand everyone encouraged my curricular and extra curricular activities molding me into a strong person. As a child I wished to be a doctor or study civil service so that I can gain name and fame and bring good name to my family. I never thought I would be a nurse when I was studying grade 10 . But all those dream positions flip flopped during a train journey with my aunt Swapna who was an oncology nurse in Carithas cancer center, Kerala, India. Our trip to our home town was a planned one after I had graduated from my grade 10 in 2007. She was neither a leader in her profession, neither I considered her profession to be a great one. To make it to the point I will focus on telling the key points during our journey, where we had few passengers who were also nursing students heading back to home town for vocation. Around 10 past 11 at night, as we were waiting to use the lavatory, my aunt Swapna noticed an alcoholic person lying on the floor unconscious and bleeding from unknown injury to his foot. I was in panic and couldn’t understand what was going on. She asked me to open the suitcase and take few clothes to cover his wound.

 

I literally saw a critical thinking leader evolved in her, who with no worry about transmitting infection or any other factors, immediately did the first aid dressing and controlled the bleeding. She asked me to call the other nursing students in the train as they could even help her save his life. As it was a running train, emergency alarm chain had to be pulled to stop the train and move the person to nearby hospital. Meanwhile everyone put in their efforts upon her guidance and the transit security along with the emergency service team transferred the patient to the hospital.  She was appreciated by everyone for her kind deed and bravery for which after few years she received the best nurse award in our town. That incident was a turning point in my career, and I saw a leader in nursing profession which was and is considered a low-grade profession in India.  I asked her how she could do that, she answered me, ‘if it was one of our family members won’t we put the best of abilities to save him?”. Then why can’t we do for another person.

 

Later after my grade 12, without any dilemma, I chose to be a nurse and I wished to erase the stigma about nursing profession. I studied harder, wanted to prove that nursing degree is not a joke but It’s the hard-work of people who are called for this profession, who is the owner of a compassionate, caring and strong hearted people like many nurses and nurses yet to come.  I always co related my profession with the bible verse that I love from Mathew 25, verse 40, ‘what so ever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me’. I have seen the value in my hero, my aunt Swapna in this wording and I do want to be a great leader where I am aught to be, spreading the seeds of love and compassion in all that I do and all that I come across.  what would have happened if she didn’t react? She was not a nurse manager, nor a nursing instructor.  She was just a nurse who did her duty as per the duty schedule. If she would not have responded, nothing would have happened other than the person losing his life bleeding. She should not have been held responsible for his injury either, as he was a stranger. This is where I saw a difference in her and her mind didn’t be judgmental, rather her heart was filled with compassion for him. We don’t have to choose to be leader to act as leader but if it is supposed to be, and if we have a strong motive to do it, the universe will create a space and situation for us to be a fruitful leader.  Just wait for it and gain lots and lots of knowledge to solve and critically act accordingly. I have been trying to excel in my career not only as a nurse, but in church and other social activities as I really do not know what my call is.  What is God the almighty wanting me to do for his children? I am just following the path He is showing me and am being a helping hand to my fellow beings as he guides me with his constant strength. Remember we all can be leaders. Plant the seed in your own house so that you can reap the fruits with confidence anywhere you travel. The seed of my skill was planted safely at my home from my very own aunt Swapna, so I will reap my fruits where I am.  That’s my motto and principle. Each one should identify each other as a leader and let’s say ‘we can do it ‘to bring a change in the life of someone .

Course Reflection

It was a great experience to be a part of this learning module which was very new to me and most of the terminologies were unknown. However, the studies will definitely have a positive impact on my professional career as well as personal life. The lessons from ‘Northouse’ gave fare idea about the types of leadership and its characteristics whereas the stories from the book ‘light from many lamps’ gave inspiration and morals for life. As a beginner in professional career, I would like to carry forward all the learnings which will certainly help me to become a good leader.

Stone et al. (2004), puts forth the differences in leadership styles that, “a core difference between transformational leadership and other styles of leadership is the leader’s flexibility and focus on the improvement of the healthcare organization and commitment towards organizational objectives (p.6). Reading was never my hobby, but this course brought out the reader in me. I loved reading the short stories from Light from many lamps, that lightened up my transit journey. I saw myself friendlier and more talkative to random people I met amidst my short travels and developed a mind to explore more and more. Having had this trait from beginning, I developed it further during this course. Northouse (2010) describes integral leaders as “people who adhere to a strong set of principles and take responsibility for their actions. Leaders with integrity inspire confidence in others because they can be trusted to do what they say they are going to do” (p. 25). I gained lot of integrity, confidence from feeling intimidated and worried about my writing skills, moreover I have shared my strength to my friends who find doing online course challenging. The number of times I had redone my paper with support from professor, developed my integrity and strong willingness to make it to the best of my ability rather than giving up. I loved a bible verse since childhood, from Matthew 25:40 ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ I kept on singing this line whenever I was asked to sing a devotional song which began with ‘what so ever you do, to the least of my people, that you do unto me.’ I tried doing good and to be humble servant of Lord in what ever I do, likewise I wished the same from a leaders’ perspective. If I would be a leader in near future, I would be following this principle and explore the thought of a colleague or other employee on how they would perceive me as a leader. I would accomplish my goal, if I conquer the heart and minds of my colleagues with a positive impact and see myself to be a leader of how I expected my leader to be. This course gave me a structure to choose a pathway and I chose to be a follower of transformational servant leadership approach. I never knew this word, but now I am familiar with it!!!

Response to Sarah Jasmin- Light fro many lamps

All the stories in Part 9 are about contentment in later years and I do appreciate your selection because it’s about a great man who really loved the life. Sir William Mulock, his voice was firm and clear as he spoke-the voice of a man who loved life, who loved his work and his fellow man, and who looked forward with pleasure to whatever still lay ahead (Watson, 1988, p. 268). A man who lived hundred years and were very active in his last years too and inspired many people by his speech on his 95th birthday. Men of fifty, of sixty, felt the weight of the years slip from their shoulders, felt somehow young in heart again… young in spirit (Watson, 1988, p. 268). Many people look ahead the life positively, irrespective of the age and many other people get inspiration from the personalities like Sir William and acquire positive attitude towards life. How can it be more effective in the way of increasing the percentage of the people who are very positive in their later years also?

Light from many lamps – Part 9 &10

“Approach the twilight of life with joy and hope, preached Rabbi Ben Ezra. Approach the last of life with eagerness, not gloom. For the last of life is the best of life. Trust God and be not afraid” (LFML, pg. 272). Part 9 stories are about to tell us, how the old age shall be productive and fruitful. Third unit of Part 9 reveals the story of Robert Browning influenced by Rabbi Ben Ezra and what he could do at the age of fifty and he realized that he had done the finest poem at his later age. Everyone has a role model to follow in life and many of the great personalities influence the people in their life.

Life is a throughout learning process and everyday there would be something to learn which can help us to become the perfectionist. Moreover, each day is fluctuating these days due to new findings and advancement of technologies. If we step back at any stage, then we would definitely be pulled out of the race of life. There are no any limitations in the perspective of age to show and develop the skills or to think about new innovations. Here I recall the founder story of KFC (Kentucky fried chicken) a well-established chain restaurant accepted globally which was introduced by the result of the thought of Colonel Sanders that what he could do after the retirement. Examples are many, to inspire the people that age is not a limit to do something and we really grow up with age in all dimensions. One thing which really drives the people to success is passion and passion can break the rules set by ages. While writing and reading this, shall we think about the real fact? I feel like majority of the people want to have relaxed life at the old age and some of the people are demotivated at later stages of their life. How effectively it can be changed worldwide?

Response to JGarland. Light from Many Lamps, Unit 8

Very good selection for your writing and all said in the fifth unit of part seven are really very true when it comes to human life. Henry David Thoreau thought about the purpose of human life and written such meaningful quotes more than a century before and I wonder how much more would have he written if he was born in this 21st century. Everyone definitely think about the purpose of our life, although majority of the people will be forced to be the part of mass living knowingly or unknowingly however the track cannot be changed once engaged. We are the decision makers of our life and it is up to us how to mold our life and what the way the life to be lived but it all changes when we are more involved in the society where the comparative life matters. As a human being we have some social responsibility too and the challenge is how it can be balanced with the perceptive of our life which is truly designed by us.

Technology a trend changer !!

The world is moving faster with the advancement in technology that has brought drastic changes in many fields, especially in business. John Smart talks about the current day practice of people not following the rules anymore in any institution. Managers do what they feel is right. The 3Ps model Possible, Preferable and Probable futures are three types of Foresight management. Possible includes ideation and innovation which are on the evolutionary side of an institution or an organization, Preferable includes vision, strategy and planning which are done by the leaders and Probable includes forecasting, risk management and prediction which are on the developmental side of an institution or organisation. Innovation, management and foresight are necessary for any entrepreneur.

According to Jack Ma, the CEO of Alibaba, a budding entrepreneur must be focused and must believe in his/her dreams. One must keep their dream alive. Mistakes are bound to happen but that is how you learn. He stresses on the being ready to face rejection. Empowering others is also very important to be successful. To Jack Ma, customers are number one priority, followed by the employees and the last being shareholders in his business strategy.

Canada Post is one among the many organizations that has been obviously affected by advancement in technology. The rise of E-commerce had increased Canada Post’s parcel division, but it too faced challenges with its infrastructure and inability to maintain the same services as large international couriers and the private sector (Government of Canada, 2016). Canada Post came up with a five-point action plan which includes moving towards community mailboxes, introducing tiered postage pricing, and strengthening the retail network. Moreover, they streamlined operations to increase efficiency and addressed the cost of labour through attrition and collective bargaining (Government of Canada, 2016). They also became more digitally mobile by introducing an app through which customers can track their packaging, look up postal codes, locate post offices, find out rates for letters and packages, manage their bills, and buy cards and postcards with custom images (Begin, n.d.).

As per Government of Canada (2016), Canada Post has a business line referred to as other services, which includes several small-scale products and services. In 2015, this category accounted for about 5% of Canada Post’s operating revenue. Businesses, governments and individual consumers are the major customers. Few of the products in this business line are: epost, which allows users to receive, pay and manage bills in one place online, remittance services that includes MoneyGram, which is an electronic money transfer service available at any Canada Post location at competitive costs and exchange rates, postal money orders that are certified cashable documents sent through the mail to transfer funds locally or internationally, another aspect is mail redirection, which allows individuals and businesses to have mail forwarded following a change of address and data products for direct marketing mail such as postal code data for targeted marketing mailing lists.

I think their reliance on technology, especially for communication and transacting business should have been implemented earlier and expanded the digitization of their infrastructure, company systems, and public engagement more deeply than they did. Though they conducted researches in 2016, they should have done some strategic prudent preparation decades ago. There still needs to be some time to do some innovative thinking around new programs and services that will take them into the next generation to be more effective.

Response to Norm – light from many lamps

Hi,

I appreciate the effort behind your writing and obviously the inspiration by Abraham Lincoln would be continued throughout and I personally got a lot of inspiration from him as I  have read many stories of him and studied in history too since schooldays. Such an amazing personality who had been the backbone of US growth and from his era I think the patriotic feel of ‘united’ had come to Americans. However, he has been inspiration to millions of people from the midst of the eighteenth century, to not only the Americans but also to the entire world.

From your writing and from the story of Abraham Lincoln we shall learn a lot about leadership in difficult situations. It is very good chapter to learn how to bring the followers united and aim for the common goal. And the results of his view and efforts are achieved over the years and decades and centuries. Such a strong desire might have fired in his mind which could encouraged him to lead the nation which were struggling badly. In this era with all the support of advanced technology and competitive financial background or else other sources of support, are we able to lead our team or family or ourselves to success? We really need to think where need to be improved. Even though it’s always inspiring the stories of Abraham Lincoln and would definitely influence our personality and the personal and professional life.

Invictus- Student choice assignment

Nelson Mandela is elected the first black President of South Africa after spending 27 years of his life in prison. He is faced with a lot of challenges during his term. He was concerned about racial divisions between black and white South Africans which often led to violence.

The movie shows how President Mandela despite belonging to the ill-treated population of his nation, strives to bring unity in his nation in the unique way. He gets this idea after watching a rugby game wherein the country’s rugby union team was not supported by their own black people and were in turn cheering for the opponent England team, as the mostly-white rugby team of the country represented prejudice and apartheid in their minds.

President Mandela meets with the captain of the team and shares his desire to see Springboks victory in the World Cup as he believes it will unite and inspire the nation. Though his idea wasn’t supported by many South Africans, both black and white, both Mandela and the rugby captain, however, stood firmly and believed that their victory in the game will successfully unite a nation torn apart by nearly 50 years of racial tensions, as for many black people, especially the radicals.

The rugby team is amazed on realizing how Mandela could spend thirty years in a tiny cell and come out ready to forgive the people who put him there. The impact of the efforts by President Mandela was so strong that a South African Airways Boeing 747-200 jetliner flew in low over the stadium as a demonstration of patriotism, with the message “Good Luck, Bokke”—the Springboks’ Afrikaans nickname—painted on the undersides of the plane’s wings. President Mandela also shows his support by wearing a Springbok cap and a replica of Pienaar’s #6 jersey. He and Pienaar meet on the field together to celebrate the improbable and unexpected victory.

This movie shows how a leader must strive to be. Being consistent and firm in their vision for the betterment of the people/team that they lead even if it means standing alone in the crowd where nobody will be there to support you. To be forgiving when there will be many backstabbing you and putting you down. To be supportive always and to cheer for even the smallest achievements that the team has. To be one with the people and make them feel belonged. To be open for interpersonal communication and sharing of views and visions that will help in better understanding of the team’s progress and shortcomings. Not let other’s opinion put you down in any way and strive towards the progress of the people/ team.

Unit 8, Blog activity 2- Recognition and a sense of belonging

Regarding recognition and a sense of belonging, I am proud and privileged to work in the organization that I do. We are democratic, and my assessment would be that we as nurses, may it be in nursing leadership, we do a fairly good job of modelling this. Most of the departments are lead by women, our leadership team is mostly female, and our staff team is made up of more women than men. This could be due to working in a health care field in a Catholic missionary elderly residential care home and the majority of health care team comprises of nurses, health care workers that basically forms a huge female dominancy. Nugent, Pollock, & Travis (2016) in their Catalyst report states that employees, regardless of gender, who experience a sense of uniqueness and a sense of belonging, feel that they are being included within the organization.

I could improve recognition and a sense of belonging for women in my organization is by encouraging staff to share about experiences when they felt intimidated as well as comfortable with their effort and discuss these experiences, and then use these experiences to help form a common vision of inclusion (Nugent, 2016, pg.no 7). As per this, we could make necessary changes in areas to make all staff feel encompassed. We could ask their opinions and additional ways for staff to give feedback. Allocate time for personal meeting with a leader to offer feedback, which perhaps would receive more honest feedback from staff who do not feel comfortable speaking up in public.

Many organizations and non-health care fields don’t always give the first priority to women for leadership roles, but I understand that in some instances there has been an effort to get more women involved in higher levels, unfortunately women aren’t first option when compared to men. Some potential reasons for this could be due to the safety, amount of travel required, lack of childcare options provided for women who are mothers, or it could be due to gender bias against women in high levels of leadership regardless of the organization openly valuing women in leadership. This system could be eradicated by collecting data about why women who have been offered these leadership positions have turned them down and then revamp the positions to make them more inclusive (Nugent et al., 2016, p. 11). Another effort could be discussing with leaders about the lack of women in these positions because “talk leads to action” (Catalyst, 2013). Moreover, having the current leaders take a test like the Implicit Association Test offered by Harvard University so that they can be ethical leaders who are honest with themselves and open with others (Northouse, 2016, p. 346) if an implicit bias does exist.

Unit 8, Blog activity 1 – Understand, pregnancy is not a barrier to leadership!

In Northouse (2018) case study 15.3- Pregnancy as a Barrier to Job Status, Marina experiences a barrier to her job status because of gender prejudice and discernment though she is a managing director for a manufacturing company for ten years and has worked extremely hard. She is highly motivated and committed to her work and she proved to achieve the promotion in the company as a top executive. Marina was reluctant to share the news about her pregnancy with her boss, Roy as she was aware about the history of the firm releasing women prior to or shortly after giving birth. Marina is fearful and anxious about the possibility of losing her position, thus pregnancy was a barrier to her achievement. Moreover, lack of “commitment to employment and motivation” (Northouse, 2018, pg.no. 408) are implied when the news is delivered to Roy which further supports gender biases for women in leadership roles.

Roy’s response highlights these gender biases and discrimination. “I knew this was going to happen sooner or later; it always does and there’s no point in talking about this now. We’ll think about it later” (Northouse, 2018, pg. no. 420), was is response despite wishing her a great motherhood and offering a thorough plan to distribute her work while she is off, he communicated with a hidden agenda of discrimination. What Roy should have said in response to Marina’s news, additionally to congratulations, would be to ask her plans prior to and after her leave by following a transformational servant leadership approach to understand Marina’s situation and needs. Discussion on planning to distribute her work and seeking to understand her needs and goals on a professionally and personal level, with the organizational policy and protocols would have been the appropriate response.

Roy should have ensured that Marina’s work will be covered in her absence and should have included Marina in the process of assigning her work to someone else or asked her suggestion for a colleague for replacement. This ensures that her work would be done effectively and provide her the comfort and encouragement. Conducting a professional growth and development planning session prior to Marina’s leave gives assurance that her goals for professional advancement won’t fall apart and discussing her career objectives and how she plans to reach them helps eradicate those gender bias about pregnancy as a physical and emotional barrier for career accomplishments.

In this case study, organizational manager was too authoritative and is preoccupied with discriminative thoughts on pregnant women in leadership positions. To eradicate this, legalities around the Family and Medical Leave Act should be front and center for an organization (Northouse, 2018). Senior administrators and division heads should have this legal education embedded into their practice and organizational policy and immediate action must be taken if law is violated. Moreover, training sessions on rights of employees and educational seminars to bring awareness to gender discrimination in the workplace is necessary. To wrap up, a change in an organization to adopt a “family-friendly reform” (Northouse, 2018, pg.no. 413) to ensure job protected maternity leaves and dismiss myths as pregnancy being a barrier to job status would benefit Marina and other pregnant women in this organization. Being pregnant isn’t a curse, it’s a boon that molds a woman to be more responsible, affectionate and protective. If she is strong enough to give life, guide another human from the scratch, she is already a great leader and will excel as a leader if given a chance to be in the eligible position keeping aside the gender discrimination. Remember, a mother is the first teacher and a mother who is educated, knowledgeable, skillful and experienced will be more fruitful.
