Light from many lamps – Part 9 &10

“Approach the twilight of life with joy and hope, preached Rabbi Ben Ezra. Approach the last of life with eagerness, not gloom. For the last of life is the best of life. Trust God and be not afraid” (LFML, pg. 272). Part 9 stories are about to tell us, how the old age shall be productive and fruitful. Third unit of Part 9 reveals the story of Robert Browning influenced by Rabbi Ben Ezra and what he could do at the age of fifty and he realized that he had done the finest poem at his later age. Everyone has a role model to follow in life and many of the great personalities influence the people in their life.

Life is a throughout learning process and everyday there would be something to learn which can help us to become the perfectionist. Moreover, each day is fluctuating these days due to new findings and advancement of technologies. If we step back at any stage, then we would definitely be pulled out of the race of life. There are no any limitations in the perspective of age to show and develop the skills or to think about new innovations. Here I recall the founder story of KFC (Kentucky fried chicken) a well-established chain restaurant accepted globally which was introduced by the result of the thought of Colonel Sanders that what he could do after the retirement. Examples are many, to inspire the people that age is not a limit to do something and we really grow up with age in all dimensions. One thing which really drives the people to success is passion and passion can break the rules set by ages. While writing and reading this, shall we think about the real fact? I feel like majority of the people want to have relaxed life at the old age and some of the people are demotivated at later stages of their life. How effectively it can be changed worldwide?

Dawn , an amazing teacher .. a passionate and accommodating person!!

I wish to go back to my middle school, if Dawn is managing the post as the Vice Principal!!! I was blessed to get to know Dawn, a busy mom of a large family, lovely and responsible wife, taken up teaching as her profession and currently working as a Vice Principle in a middle school at eastern part of BC. The way I felt comfortable and relaxed to video chat with her from the very first minute proved how accommodating she is. There is no wonder why one could choose her in this leadership post if one gets to know her passion, her skills and the creativity in her thoughts. She is a motivator, a friendly person, moreover a blessed person to help her husband who is a Pastor and a teacher by profession to spread the word of God.

Our one hour and 15 minutes of video conversation didn’t feel like a long boring talk rather I expanded my understandings on the various topics we discussed using the questions I asked from Dan Rockwell’s article, ‘The Anatomy of Performance Enhancing Coaching Conversations’.

When I asked her to list the skills/behaviors that are essential for success in her role as the Vice Principal and If she was asked to give a number, a rank, for each of these skills and behaviors, what would that be? Dawn choose communication with students, teachers, family and other community members as the top most priority, followed by understanding policies and procedures, problem solver, creative, being consistent and concise, relational, organized, following ethical and moral values and innovative to be in the post of Vice Principal being a great leader and supporter.

It is evident that she sees herself satisfied and doing her best at communication skills and has innovative ideas on keeping track on students and concerns of teachers, by having email and direct communication. She is planning to find time to know each person in a better way. In fact, she is updated as she is consistent in checking her emails and is concise in her email messages as she understands that anyone might get bored reading long passages, instead she communicates efficiently with important information in emails and later expands her thoughts during teachers’ meetings.

When it comes to the second skill that she wants to incorporate is, understanding policies and procedures which is essential for her as she is in an authoritative level. Though she finds it challenging sometimes to keep updated on these areas though she kept ready few notes and books to read whenever she finds time. She understands the importance of it and is passionate to acquire more information and knowledge.

Thirdly, she identified problem solving skills to be important in her profession as she come across varied issues among students, teachers and family. She rates herself above average in this area, as she inculcates various skills to be problem solver and as she has planned and already implemented to find few solution to problems and bring it to her senior, the Principal and instead of he suggesting his ideas, she puts forth couple of options and he chooses the best one out of her proposals. This thought of her impressed me as she seeks help from her senior by doing her part which brought a team effort rather than a one man show where both leaders are equally responsible and satisfied for their decision.

Dawn’s long term goal after completion of her higher education and once her kids are settled, in 8 to 10 years, the couple want to go abroad and plant the seeds of education in areas where children lack opportunity to study, wish to start schools at remote areas and spend her life preaching word of God, educating and helping the needy along with her husband. And I strongly believe in her passion and pray for her dreams to come true. I was blessed to get a good friend, a motivator through this activity. Wishing Dawn and family all the best wishes to be fruitful teachers and to grow the garden of professional and well organized educational institutions in the days to come!!!

Response to Daniel’s post on Read, Talk , Write

Hi,

The different stages one must go through in order to reach maximum potential as a pastor or church leader is explained so well in your blog. The stages are listed as per their importance. The first being the need to practice as the more you practice the more intelligent you will become in what you’re practicing. It is a universally accepted fact that nothing can make you perfect in what your are doing other than practice. Even though everyone starts off as a novice there is difference between a young novice who will probably follow the laid down rules and an adult novice who will preferably act according to his experiences and knowledge challenging personal and culture assumptions instead of sticking to the rules. This is followed by being competent in one’s own style. You do not remain a novice forever. You have to be competent in your own style in order to advance it so that you don’t have to follow or act as other’s you admire do. This helps you to  advance in your own style as you are now competent. This article though ends with 2 questions as in if these traits come naturally to an individual as a church leader, and if there is a time period fixed to be a novice as it cannot be denied that there are differences when it comes to natural ability versus learned ability.

Really enjoyed your write up!!!

Response to Christina unit 1,blog 3, activity 5 servant leadership

Hai Christina!

I have gone through your blog and you have so aptly put forth the description of what actually a servant leader does and expected as well. I strongly agree to the point which you have mentioned that at times leader leaders are taken negatively ,that’s so true because regardless of situation, meeting the ethics without compromising as well reaching the goals is breathtaking for sure.

As your question asked of how can a leader balance without compromising and continuing serving? I think that as we know the leader is bound to be selfless and prioritize others first which is both inclusive of organizations’ goal as well as followers. Leader should definitely focus on the process beneficial two ways. To make it more convincing leader should establish a vision amongst the followers and maintain ideal attitude equally towards each, so that each can be accountable for what ever outcome would be and know what might be the leaders expecting from them. But yes it depends upon the criticality of the situations too.

Eagerly waiting to read more of your posts !!
