Leadership traits and skill – self and peer assessment review( unit 2, activity 3)

Love to quote the view on learning by the legend Aristotle, “Learning is an ornament in prosperity, a refuge in adversity, and a provision in old age” and what makes a person learn more is from his own understanding of what’s lacking in him. This self assessment  has helped me to judge my abilities, actions, qualities, and realized my strengths and weaknesses by myself being the critique with the help of my colleagues and roommates.

In the leadership trait questionnaire, I found others have judged me the way I judged myself except in areas of self confidence, and outgoing where I gave low score for my confidence but my assessors thought I was doing better with my confidence. However, by personality trait, I am rather shy and restrained when it comes to expressing my views on controversy topics. But my colleagues think I am doing what I am supposed to do. I have to absorb to cultivate in these areas and take risks in social settings, to speak up and act immediately.

The Skills Inventory indicated that I have strengths in both human and conceptual abilities and a bit lower in my technical leadership. I do need to have the technical understanding to be able to be a nurse manager or supervisor in future and I have to work on this skill to be a successful leader. Moreover, I have acknowledged that leading with vision and being goal oriented is my strong point and need to focus on being more organised to achieve my goal. Being too sensitive to situations and as I identified a high score in human and conceptual skills, I need to focus on the situation as a whole rather than carried away by emotions which intern affects my goal.

Finally, the Leadership behavior Questionnaire specified my strengths in both task completion and relationship. Though not in any leadership roles at present in my health care profession, I wish I could be a great leader by being what I am, friendly and accommodating, creating a team environment, acknowledging others’ opinions and encouraging one another, providing a safe place for growth, while also finishing tasks and objectives professionally.

To wrap up,  I have faith that, with incessant learning, sustained growth and focus in developing my technical qualities, not being too sensitive, I will be more effective in team environment in my life’s journey. Learning is never ending, so is evaluation and rationalization. It goes hand in hand. So I learnt from this activity to practice self assessing now and then to keep a track on ourselves!!!

Light from many lamps Part 1

“ Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Abraham Lincoln (Watson, Light from many lamps, part one , p.g.no 1). Happiness shall have the prime importance in human life. People find many ways to be happy by spending more time in their areas of interest. However, in today’s busy world, do people get enough time for their own happy hours? Moreover are they successive to spread the happiness in their family and the society? Instead of finding spare time to do congenial work to be happy, people need to do what they love. Such people are more satisfied  in their life because they love what they do wholeheartedly. But this satisfaction is limited to their professional area, and in fact even not extended to the personal life. From the book, Light from many lamps by Watson, he quotes a sentence written by Marcus Aurelius in his immortal Meditations, “Very little is needed to make a happy life. It is all within yourself , in your way of thinking.”

Competitive mindset, comparative life, over ambitious about future are found increasing these days and these are the stones and thorns in the way of life towards happiness. It’s the fact that money is required to live the life, however it gives the feeling that people live to make the money, then where is the happiness. First of all instead of waiting for happiness, remember that the happiness is in one’s heart, he/she is responsible and it should start spreading towards the family and thereby the society. No one decides a man’s happiness, till he /she decides to be happy. Being a social animal, it’s one of our duty to have strong and healthy social relationship.

We are the leader of our life and it is more important to be happy to lead our life to be successful. Everyone needs to face the ups and downs in life. Therefore it is important to have such a strong mindset to achieve the goal. Sometimes our life may go through the unexpected or unwanted routes but it should not affect our regular life. In my personal life, whatever problems I face while running my daily life to reach the destiny should not affect my professional career because it derates my leadership qualities and moreover I fail to deliver my duty 100% and it negatively affects the people while I take care being a Nurse. Therefore it is important to find happiness in our daily life and it’s required to develop the leadership quality to spread the happiness even if we are travelling through very difficult moments of our life.
