When one has influence on a group of people even without a title, that person is referred to as an emergent leader.

In February 2013, while in business and not yet in pastoral work a good friend of mine called and one of the volunteers in our church passed away suddenly due to a heart attack. He was 42 years when he passed away leaving a wife and 2 kids with a 3rd on the way. Ken was dealing with a lot in his life at the moment; stress had the best of him. He was a deputy CEO of a big bank in the city and it was undergoing an acquisition, he was studying a gruesome Master’s degree and he was actively involved in Church as a children’s teacher. After his death, I realized that many men were living very busy and imbalanced lives so I approached my Senior Pastor then and asked if something could be done to bring the men in our church to a place of a good work life balance. I also mentioned to him how concerned I have been because our church didn’t have a Men’s ministry and men desperately needed to be ministered to. My pastor asked me to write a concept note on how we could do some of this work of reaching men. I wrote one and sent it in 24 hours. He called me in a few days later and asked me if I could consider becoming the men’s ministry leader. I told him a was young (29 at the time) and felt so inadequate and didn’t think I could lead men, many of whom were twice my age. He insisted that he had prayed about it and felt that I would to the job and he would support me. I fearfully accepted and I’ve been serving the men in my church ever since. The first three years as a ministry leader and the last years to date as a full time men’s pastor. That a story of how I emerged as a leader.

Northouse asserts with reference from J.P Kotter, that the essential activities of management and leadership and how they’re played out by managers and leaders are as follows;

Management whose core role is to produce order and consistency involves;

Planning and budgeting Establishing agendas, Setting time tables and allocating resources.

Organizing and staffing which entails Providing structure, making job placements and establishing rules and procedures.

Controlling and problem solving which entails developing incentives, generating creative solutions and taking corrective action.

2. Leadership whose core role is to produce change and movement involves the following activities;

Establishing directions which entail creating a vision, clarifying the big picture and setting strategies.

Aligning people which entails communicating goals, Seeking commitment and building teams and coalitions.

Motivating and inspiring which entails Inspiring and energizing, empowering subordinates and satisfying unmet needs.

The approaches that I think are essential to the prosperity of an organization are predominantly the leadership approaches and to a smaller extent, the management approaches.

Throughout my leadership tenure either as a business owner or as a pastor currently, I have come to realize that the leadership approaches of Vision casting, team building, clear communication, empowering team members and having them embrace and own the Vision among others have always yielded more results in propelling both the business and church organizations have run. That notwithstanding, I always introduced some management approaches to my leadership mainly to ensure that my empowered team members had a structure upon which to effectively and efficiently serve the Vision.

The question I would like to close with is; Which of the two forms of leadership is more likely to thrust an organization to effective success. Assigned or Emergent leadership?

Kotter, J.
