A basic definition of stewardship provided by Dictionary.com (n.d) is \u201cthe responsible overseeing and protection of something worth caring for and preserving. I believe that things can get taken from us just as easily as they\u2019ve been given and is a mindset that we should all have towards our environment and our community. To me, stewardship comes with the awareness of how our actions impact our neighbors, not just people but also plants, animals, the atmosphere, and the ocean systems, and it represents our capacity to do right by those we share this planet with.<\/p>\n
Stewardship is valuable to me because I\u2019ve recently realized how our behaviour and impact on the environment is slowly destroying the very planet we live on. Only with the last few decades have we begun to grasp the consequences of our behaviour of over harvesting natural resources. As a result of our self-destructive behaviours, we\u2019ve put our planet at risk from global crises such as fresh water shortages, global warming, or deforestation. Having the mindset as an individual that\u2019s passionate about serving the greater good allows me to be mindful of my impact on other people or the environment and moves me to spread this mindset onto others.<\/p>\n
Stewardship is a value I will always be aspiring to improve. I act on my values of stewardship everyday from small decisions such as choosing to find proper recycling bins for my plastic containers rather than lazily dumping them in the nearest garbage bin to adopting a vegetarian lifestyle to abstain from the unnecessary suffering of animals. I know that my individual actions alone provide a miniscule impact on the planet which is why spreading this mindset to others is key in curbing our destructive effects on the planet. I\u2019m currently educating myself in sustainability so that I\u2019ll also have the skills to propose solutions to greener business practices along with adopting this same mindset in others.<\/p>\n\n
