Do you think this has a direct correlation to feeling undervalued in the workplace? Our Canadian Universal Healthcare system does have its many challenges. There are often long waits to get needed care. However, would you rather have to pay the private healthcare rates and have exorbitant hospital bills to pay? I believe both systems have their own unique set of challenges.

Currently, I believe healthcare is in crisis mode in terms of being overburdened. We have a high number of baby boomers that are entering their senior years and our current system is not prepared for it. We see this daily in-home health. The wait lists for a facility are long, sometimes taking patients 1-2 years to secure a bed in Long-term Care. Home Support is not set up for care necessary to keep an aging patient safely at home. Home Support workers are currently being trained to take on more tasks that are clinical ranging from ostomy care, trach care, and complex wound care.

In my experience, I would say not only creating a culture of learning is needed but also commitment. As Hughes et Al explain “Commitment is the attitude that people hold toward the strategy. People are committed when they are willing to expand effort towards the needs of the organization over and above the effort needed to meet their own individual goals” (p.41). Healthcare is always evolving, every day there are new discoveries made and technological advance that aid us in providing better care. I agree with you that a learning culture is needed but I believe a commitment to this culture is the key.

Your story of the overworked nurse is far too common. The system is currently not great, for an industry that is desperately seeking more staff. The requirements to get into medical and or nursing are almost unattainable. How can we make healthcare education more accessible to provide better care? Have you considered an online learning portal? At Fraser Health we use what we call the Learning Hub and we offer many free courses to our staff.

Hughes, R. L., Beatty, K. C., Dinwoodie, D.
