When thinking about my experience in the context of the andragogy principles it is clear my experience has been great.

In my youth, I relied on my parents for everything. I made mistakes and struggled with who I was and wanted to be. Right out of high school I went to university with no idea of what I wanted to study. I felt most of my peers were equally as immature as I. Looking back it is apparent that what my peers thought of me and my social status was my sole focus. Unfortunately, at the time I felt the institution and instructors did not care about the students well being whatsoever. My younger university experience was isolating experience going from dependant to trying to float on my own. Navigating the perceptions in my head from the actual reality of the experience proved difficult.

Fast forward to going back to university in my thirties and I had a completely different experience. Going back as an adult and learning alongside other adult learners was better than I could have ever imagined. All my peers were coming from different yet similar backgrounds, everyone was there working towards a common goal. My professors encouraged me, prayed for me and took an interest in my life and future goals. I believe that after having varied work experience in a specific field prepared me better for adult learning. My perception was that I valued the education more than in my youth. I respected the time that the instructors put into the lectures and preparing course content. I was able to correlate what I was learning in the classroom and apply it to everyday work life. When I decided to go back to school it was solely based on an internal motivation to move forward in my career. I had a clear vision of what I wanted to accomplish both career and academically. Adult learning has changed the way in which I think about myself and the world around me.

Adult learning Blog post My experience with being an adult learner has been positive and encouraging for the most part.
