A transformational leader can see the talents and strengths of different team members often before the individual can even recognize it themselves. In my professional life, I have been lucky to be under this type of leadership not once but twice. Not only did it challenge me, but it forced me to go outside of myself and focus on others. Avolio et Al insist successful transformational leadership “motivate their followers to move beyond self-interest and work for the collective good” (as cited in Wang, Oh, Courtright & Colbert, 2011, pg. 224).

Define and describe the principles of ethical leadership.

Ethical leadership is leadership that is governed by respect for the values, beliefs and dignity of others. Northouse dictates that there are five principles of ethical leadership they are respect, service, justice, honesty, and community (2019, p.346). Respecting others includes listening to them, encouraging them to be themselves, accept their differing opinions, treat them with understanding and empathy. Service is self-explanatory in that the goal is to serve others above ourselves. Justice is treating everyone as equal no differential treatment. Honesty is about being vulnerable and truthful and communicating openly with your team. Building a sense of community within your team starts with a shared goal.

Which 2 of the 5 covered in Northouse Chapter 13 do you think are the most important?

The two principles of ethical leadership I believe are most important are respect and honesty. Respect because if you don’t respect your team members negativity will fester and then spread like wildfire. Where there is negativity, productivity decreases, and morale declines. It is important for people to feel respected and giving them space where they are free to be themselves. A vital part of having a successful team lies in how you treat people. Honesty is important because it helps build trust and credibility. It is crucial to be true to your word as a leader. Followers look to you as an example and will mirror your behavior.

References

Gang Wang, Oh, I.-S., Courtright, S. H., & Colbert, A. E. (2011).
