{"id":10,"date":"2018-02-23T01:07:23","date_gmt":"2018-02-23T09:07:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/ldrs501\/assignment-3\/"},"modified":"2019-10-26T15:11:32","modified_gmt":"2019-10-26T22:11:32","slug":"assignment-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/ldrs501\/assignment-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Assignment 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Week 3 through 7 \u2013 Team Assignment 2<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Strategic Leadership Team Project (15%)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>Strategic Directions \u2013 Sustain, Delete, Rethink and Add-Innovate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Submission is due Day 7 of Week 7 at 23:59 PST<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This assignment is intended as an applied learning experience using SWOT in conjunction with either a <em><strong>\u2018brain storming\u2019<\/strong><\/em> process or the newer approach of <strong>\u2018brain swarming\u2019<\/strong> to develop your information.<\/p>\n<p>SWOT analysis is a long standing strategic process used successfully by various and varying organizations for many years.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1165\" height=\"656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NVwQNOIu808?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>SWOT Analysis however, is in declining use as are <strong>Brain storming<\/strong> processes.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1165\" height=\"656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9K8W4ooygUU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Its underlying methodology often criticized as contributing to <strong>group think<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1165\" height=\"656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CWEvJciU0Zc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Review of these principles allows learners to gain experience with methodologies critical in developing an effective strategic leadership toolkit.<\/p>\n<p>A newer process of <strong>Brain Swarming<\/strong> focuses attention on a Sustain, Delete, Rethink, Add, Innovate process based on a shift of thinking process included in <strong>Brain Swarming<\/strong> and represents a different approach to the discipline of strategic thinking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/video\/3373616535001\/brainswarming-because-brainstorming-doesnt-work\">https:\/\/hbr.org\/video\/3373616535001\/brainswarming-because-brainstorming-doesnt-work<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brain swarming rejects gathering everyone in a room to force a solution in an environment not necessarily suitable for everyone. While <strong>Brain Storming<\/strong> is the practice of sharing ideas while withholding judgment, <strong>Brain Swarming<\/strong> asks: <strong>Why do we need to talk in the first place?<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5>How brain swarming works:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Learning outcomes are defined, then refined into cluster groups.<\/li>\n<li>Inputs are sought from each team \u2013 there are limits on the number of inputs in each cluster so strategic choices are required by each team<\/li>\n<li>Your input becomes pieces to a puzzle joining various contributions into strategic perspectives the team can sort. (see <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/video\/3373616535001\/brainswarming-because-brainstorming-doesnt-work\">https:\/\/hbr.org\/video\/3373616535001\/brainswarming-because-brainstorming-doesnt-work<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Assignment Parameters<\/h5>\n<p>Using Lepsinger&#8217;s 6 Bridge Building Principles in &#8220;Closing the Execution Gap (2010) and Hughes, Beatty and Dunwoody&#8217;s assessment tools for assessing organizational capacity for change in Becoming a Strategic Leader (2014) from Exhibits 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 (pp. 130-133) and the AAR six step process outlined on p. 134;<\/p>\n<p>Assess the suggested strategies developed for the organization reviewed in your SWOT analysis of the organization chosen to determine the anticipated success or failure of the changes suggested for the organization&#8217;s future practice and suggested strategies determined for change in the organization.<\/p>\n<p>You can use a brainstorming or brain swarming approaches for reviewing the questions in the SWOT analysis. <em>(Whichever tool your team uses is acceptable as long as the team is comfortable with the tool chosen \u2013 both are supplied for your review \u2013 direct any questions to me in the Q &amp; A section of the course page if you experience any challenges with the process.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Each team must submit the results of a SWOT analysis for an organization in line with the requirements mentioned above. The analysis will use Lepsinger\u2019s (2010) 6 Bridge Builders (pp. 25-203) and the questions contained in Hughes, Beatty and Dinwoodie (2014) &#8211; Exhibits 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 (pp. 130-133) and the AAR six step process outlined on p. 134; to determine the success or failure of the organization to apply the changes discovered by the team in the SWOT Process.<\/p>\n<p>The team lead <em>(or a team agreed designate<\/em>) will assign all materials related to team reviews and is responsible for submitting the finalized material to PressBooks for grading.<\/p>\n<p>The PressBooks material must include descriptive notes where the graphics do not explain the material fully and include clear referencing, citing all reference materials used in the exploration and conclusions for the materials covered.<\/p>\n<h4>The team will:<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Select an organization to review using a SWOT analysis. <em>(The organization can be fictional or actual that team members have awareness of.)<\/em> In the case of an actual organization, the choice for naming the actual organization or the organization remaining\u00a0 anonymous is solely at the discretion of the organization. If anonymous, reviewers need to ensure anonymity is protected throughout the assignment and the remainder of the course (including all published results).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8211; For the purpose of time the choice and identity of the organization needs completion by the team for the middle of Week 3 <em>(Wednesday)<\/em><br \/>\n2. The team will develop their SWOT Questions, as they relate to the four quadrants of a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) and arrange an interview with a significant leader of the organization for the end of week 4 <em>(Sunday)<\/em><br \/>\n3. The team will review interview responses and how they relate to the 4 quadrants by the end of Week 5.<br \/>\n4. Compile findings and results by the end of Week 6 <em>(Sunday)<\/em><br \/>\n5.
