Once you read the materials below complete post 4.4.\u00a0Follow the instructions for the learning activity to gain understanding and interact with the related material for greater understanding of the Week 4 Strategic Leadership principles outlined.<\/p>\n<h4>Organizational <strong>Information <\/strong>Strategies<\/h4>\n<p>Once you understand the various thinking models and habits of your teams, there is the development of effective communication strategies to assist in communicating to the diverse thinking styles represented by the teams within the organizational framework; from the Board and Executive Leadership, on through the grassroots members of your most ad hoc teams. Clear communication of strategic goals and plans is imperative for the success of any organization wanting to fulfill its strategic imperatives.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; the greater the uncertainty of the task, the greater the amount of information that has to be processed between decision makers during the execution of the task. (Galbraith, p. 28)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jay Galbraith, as early as 1974, identified the importance of informational strategies across organizations to ensure the message did not get lost in the diversity of the teams represented within the organizational framework. He outlines the following information strategies for organizations, still effective for use in today&#8217;s rapidly changing and strongly challenging strategy driven corporate environments. His suggestions include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Increasing the ability of teams to pre-plan before going forward.<\/strong> Allowing teams the ability to pre-plan provides the opportunity to assign various and varying team members to tasks they are best suited to participate in. Taking into consideration their strengths, weaknesses, thinking styles and schedules for completion, can allow a team to be the most effective with the tools at hand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increase their\u00a0flexibility to adapt to their inability to pre-plan<\/strong> by providing more explanation and investigation time to put it all together. Taking into account the various thinking styles, addressing bias and allowing issues of distrust to be explored and responded to can help remove barriers to pre-planning by responding to concerns or challenges within the corporate environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Work with what you&#8217;ve got<\/strong>, not what you wish you had. &#8220;Decrease the level of performance required for continued viability.&#8221; (p. 28) We all want a dream team, but the reality is most organizations simply have great teams that can work phenomenally at a level of equality focused on moving the goals forward and accomplishing the tasks within their ability levels and understanding of the goals. Communicating clear goals to a team you have confidence in, versus adding the undue pressure of heightened expectations they may not be able to achieve within the time frames assigned will allow everyone and every goal to have the best opportunity for fulfillment and support of the strategies enlisted for successful organizational growth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To accomplish these goals, Galbraith suggests using a mechanistic model to address the nuances representative of complex teams, whether due to numbers of teams and component member parts or thinking styles, biases, distrust issues or other variables arising in the process. He suggests &#8216;integrating mechanisms which increase its information processing capabilities.&#8217; (p. 29)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Coordination by Rules or Programs.<\/strong> Rules or programs coordinate behaviour between interdependent groups and responsibilities within teams and organizational structures.\u00a0Each role executes the appropriate decision or behaviour appropriate to the assigned task or responsibility.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hierarchy.<\/strong>\u00a0As the organization faces situations where no rules are set for the situation, good hierarchy can provide direction and focus to the teams to allay any uncertainties or a stoppage in momentum. Used sparingly and only as necessary, this can be a useful tool in assisting the forward momentum of strategic goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coordination by Targets or Goals.<\/strong>\u00a0As uncertainty increases, coordination must also increasing to specify goals and targets related to the various team responsibilities within the strategic process. The organization highlights processes to help teams achieve goals to allow employees to select behaviours conducive to accomplishing the intended organizational goals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Regardless of your process, you do need one, it must take into account the nuances in thinking, the relationships with and within the organization and understand the levels of ability the teams have in meeting goals and making strategic initiatives successful. Leaders must provide leadership to allow leaders within the organization to lead. Taking shortcuts, placing expectations too high or simply leaving outcomes to chance are not options leaders can afford when dealing with the future and health of the organizations they serve.<\/p>\n<p><u>Choice and Feelings<\/u><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0 \u201cThe test of first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two <\/i><i>opposed <\/i><i>ideas in the mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.\u201d &#8211;<\/i> F. Scott Fitzgerald (1936)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Values, Beliefs, Traditions and Symbols<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As we move to how values beliefs and symbols affect\/effect strategy and the success of strategic goals within an organization, we need to be aware of how we view values on various topics. For this exercise, look at the exercise below. It asks you to sort, by importance to you, the educational values you think should be emphasized in public schools.<\/p>\n<h4>Post 4.4<\/h4>\n<h4>Organizational <strong>Information <\/strong>Strategies<\/h4>\n<h4>Unit Learning Outcomes<\/h4>\n<p>Upon completion of post 4.4 learners will be able to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Develop an appreciation for organizational information strategies.<\/li>\n<li>Develop an understanding for effective mechanisms to address the thinking nuances represented by various teams in an organization.<\/li>\n<li>Appreciate the importance of values, beliefs, traditions and symbols in an organization&#8217;s strategic success.<\/li>\n<li>Use the Q-sort Sheet for a variety of issues within their working environments.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Educational Values Exercise<i><\/i><u><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the Q-Sort Sheet below, rank the following educational values according to what you think should be emphasized in public schools.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>competing with others<\/li>\n<li>Fostering creativity<\/li>\n<li>Developing intellectual potential<\/li>\n<li>Cooperating through teamwork<\/li>\n<li>Stressing individual development<\/li>\n<li>Developing positive social relationships<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring a well-organized, orderly environment<\/li>\n<li>Developing student emotional stability<\/li>\n<li>Preparing career skills<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-295\" src=\"http:\/\/create.twu.ca\/ldrs501\/files\/2018\/03\/Educational-Values-Exercise_edited-2-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/ldrs501\/files\/2018\/03\/Educational-Values-Exercise_edited-2-300x244.jpg 300w, https:\/\/create.twu.ca\/ldrs501\/files\/2018\/03\/Educational-Values-Exercise_edited-2.jpg 623w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To make it interesting, ask three friends, family members, coworkers, or for the adventurous, three strangers to complete the exercise, then compare responses.<\/p>\n<p>Create a new post on your blog and respond to the following questions (maintaining confidentiality, of course):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is the same?<\/li>\n<li>What&#8217;s different?<\/li>\n<li>Where do you agree?<\/li>\n<li>Where do you differ?<\/li>\n<li>What do the results tell you about the people who filled out the form?<\/li>\n<li>What are their values?<\/li>\n<li>What is their view on education?<\/li>\n<li>Any other question you want to analyze from the data.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Regardless of the outcome. the exercise can tell you a lot about what you value and what the people around you value. The differences are not areas of dissension, simply areas of awareness. People who do not hold your specific values exist. They are within your scope of friendships, family and acquaintance.
