Recently I was in one such situation myself. I took my friend to an emergency ward as he was in acute pain due to kidney stone disease. After waiting in a line for about half an hour to get an admission form, when we finally reached in front and told the receptionist that he was in acute pain, her only response to this was “yes he looks a little uncomfortable.” A little uncomfortable when he was crying in pain! I wasn’t too surprised at the indifferent attitude of the healthcare worker. Due to high demand, overtime shifts and also going through this on a daily basis because of flaws in the system, health workers often become unsympathetic and detached. “This might happen when members get caught up in day-to-day activities and pressure and let their perspective on the overall value they provide to the organization slip into the background.” (Hughes et al., 2014, p.169)

One way to tackle this problem is to include those who firsthand see and handle this situation. It is below the senior level management where the strategic leadership occurs. (Hughes et al., 2014, p. 168) Identification of the problem is the first step of appreciative inquiry which is the long waiting time of ER’s and the second step is the find out the causes of the problem which can be done by including the staff working in those emergency departments as they have the most insightful knowledge about the situation. The third step is generating solutions, and the last is to implement the best solutions. ( Jon Townsin, July 12, 2013)

According to a report, A Strategy to Reduce Emergency Department Wait Times in Newfoundland and Labrador 2012, daily data on time wait in the emergency department, pinpointing the pattern where and when patients visit the most will help ensure proper scheduling of staff in relation to the influx of patients and their specific needs.

Townsin.
