I wonder if their thoughts on this are more geared towards large businesses, as I find often in educational settings, there is quite a bit of diversity of skill as teachers need to be a jack of all trades. (Hughes et al. 2014, p. 205). I do see the feelings of “threat to one’s position, resources, or other personal interests” as a common struggle in the education world as teachers often place the needs of their class above the needs of the school. When I look at “difficulties complementing short-term with longer-term” I feel that teachers and administrators are usually good planners for the longer-term (Hughes et al. 2014, p. 204). Your strategies for annual retreats, travelling together, having dinners together help to create community in the leadership team and that will help to make the “employees feel respected” (Lepsinger, 2010, p. 14). Creating this community through social activities is a great way to remove that feeling of threat (Hughes et al. 2014, p. 204)

When looking at your example of the science fair as part of Galbraith’s (2014) formal groups section, what kind of hierarchy would you implement? I understand choosing a group leader from their area of expertise, but how would you structure the role and who would report to the project manager. I think of science fair’s we have done at my school and realize there is always a project manager (the teacher that takes the lead on organizing the science fair). That teacher, then directs other teachers in areas of structure of projects, assessment of projects, and curricular competencies. Each of those three areas report to the lead teacher and plan out their area in conjunction with each other, much like the planning process mentioned on pages 102-103 (Galbraith 2014). I feel like we often plan school events using the “Lean Canvas” (Ungerer et al. 2016, p.123) but when required to justify our curriculum through curriculum planning guides or unit plans we revert to a more “Expanded business model” (Ungerer et al. 2016, p. 125). Do you think we should be more dedicated in our planning of events as a STL to fleshing out the plan or is it ok to work through the Lean Canvas in “faster, looser” types of events (Ungerer et al. 2016, p. 123)

Your school seems to have a great strategic plan for further development. The personal reflection we all do in these assignments is helpful for further plotting out the vision and directions of our schools. Thanks for a great post

Galbraith, J. R.
