Last year, on a long family roadtrip, I discovered that Shonda Rhimes, writer of Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice<\/em>, and Scandal,\u00a0<\/em> is also the author of the inspirational book\u00a0Year of Yes: How to dance it out, stand in the sun, and be your own self<\/em>.<\/a> Rhimes has become\u00a0a bit of a personal hero of mine — often capturing the challenges of everyday life in such a creative, poetic, and matter-of-fact way that — in the middle of an entertaining story —\u00a0you realize you have just heard great wisdom.<\/p>\n

One of the stories that always sticks with me is a conversation between Dr. Burke and Dr. Yang regarding a mentor to Burke \u2013 an accomplished violinist who\u2019s life Burke was trying to save.<\/p>\n

It says something important about life. And learning.<\/p>\n

Burke: There was an interview that Eugene gave.\u00a0 I saved it.\u00a0 I taped it to my bathroom mirror.\u00a0 He said that he wasn\u2019t the most talented student at music school, but he said what he lacked in natural ability he made up for in discipline.\u00a0 He practiced.\u00a0 All the time.\u00a0 All the time he practiced.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t like you, I wasn\u2019t the most talented student in school, I wasn\u2019t the brightest, but I was the best.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

Yang: You practiced.<\/em><\/p>\n

Burke: I practiced<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
