Cronin and his struggle and frustration with writing a book. I occurred to me that often our greatest struggle as leaders is that which we have with ourselves. I find that my expectations for others are high, but even higher for myself as I struggle with my perceived personal failings, inconsistencies, and social shortcomings. So often the life of a leader is lived in public, that the only place we can show weakness is within ourselves. And this is a lonely place to be. In order to be effective leaders in the midst of it, we need to be very self aware and come to a place of inner healing (Northouse, 2019).

As a servant leader I am learning to come to terms with myself and honest about my strengths and weaknesses, biases and perspectives, and how these affect others (Spears, 2010, Northouse, 2019). I need to step aside and ask how my own inner pain, struggle, or experiences may influence my decision making. Then, after reflection, pause and look at other factors and perspectives in order to come to a fair decision.

Being able to bring language to my struggles and talk with others is really important in order to develop as a leader. I have a few chosen people in my life with whom I can do this and they have been instrumental to my development. I have learned that as I attempt to bring healing to other people’s’ lives through relationships (Northouse, 2019), I also need to seek out healing for myself. In trusting relationships and through mentorship, we can tell our stories, be vulnerable, and gain healing in certain areas of our lives. It is through relationships with others that we are able to find the strength to overcome our obstacles, namely, that of ourselves.

References:

Northouse, P.
