I think sometimes as leaders we get caught up in the quest for positive and inspirational stories, encouraging others to look forward to a better future, and being the ones who “put a good face on it”, that we neglect to acknowledge our own fears and discouragements. Change can be hard. Leading change can be even harder.

Your encouragement to others around you to see the bigger picture is important. Especially in times of change and uncertainty. The first thing that Heifetz and colleagues encourage leaders to do during times of transition, is to “get on the balcony” (as cited in Northouse, 2019). This means to step away from the situation, get some distance, and begin to look around at the bigger picture. By “being on a balcony”, one gets a bird’s eye view as to what is going on and have a better perspective. It not only helps to see what is going on organizationally, but I believe it is important for us as leaders to help us see where we fit in the change process. Or where the change process fits in our lives. Inevitably, changes we go through as leaders shapes and molds us as people, and refines our character. You have aptly noted this and are embracing it. I am confident the process will mold you into a better leader. Thanks for sharing!

References:

Grace, M. (2018, November 30). Seeing the whole picture.
