Simple Present tense, a single noun\u00a0<b>subject take<\/b><b>s<\/b>\u00a0a singular verb (almost always ending in \u201cs\u201d).<\/p><p>However, when they are plural,\u00a0<b>subject<\/b><b>s<\/b><b>\u00a0take\u00a0<\/b>plural verbs (almost always the \u201cnormal\u201d present tense verb that you would use after \u201cto,\u201d often not ending in \u201cs\u201d).<\/p><p>One way to remember is that if you are using the\u00a0<strong>S<\/strong><strong>imple Present<\/strong>\u00a0tense, your\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>S<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>needs to go somewhere: either on the noun or on the verb. Another way is to remember that if your subject is\u00a0<strong>S<\/strong><strong>ingular<\/strong>, then your verb needs an\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>S<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p><p>If your subject is a noun, this only occurs when using Simple Present tense\u00a0<i>or<\/i>\u00a0when using \u201cwas\/were.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1092e05 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"1092e05\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-afd821c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"afd821c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Sentences with Multiple Subjects<\/h3><p>What happens when you join singular subjects? Does that count as singular or plural? Well, with multiple subjects, verb agreement depends on the whole\u00a0<strong>compound subject<\/strong>\u00a0together.<\/p><p>Conjunctions that \u201cadd\u201d the subject elements together, such as \u201c<strong>and<\/strong>,\u201d almost always mean the compound subject needs a\u00a0<strong>plural<\/strong>\u00a0verb. (1 cat and 1 cat together\u00a0make up a group of 2 cats.)<\/p><p>On the other hand, conjunctions that treat the subject elements as \u201cseparate\u201d such as \u201c<strong>or<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>nor<\/strong>\u201d almost always mean the compound subject needs a\u00a0<strong>singular<\/strong>\u00a0verb. (1 cat on its own kept separate from another cat on its own\u00a0<em>does not<\/em>\u00a0make up a group of 2 cats.)<\/p><p>However, if one or more of the subjects is plural, the conjunction doesn\u2019t matter. Go ahead and use a plural verb. With personal pronouns, only\u00a0<em>he<\/em>,\u00a0<em>she<\/em>,\u00a0<em>it<\/em>, (and\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0used as a singular\u2013check with your prof to see if this is acceptable) require use of explicitly singular verbs.\u00a0<em>I<\/em>,\u00a0<em>we<\/em>,\u00a0<em>you<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0all take the \u201cnormal\u201d verbs\u2026 except with\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>was.<\/em>\u00a0These guys are just tricky, so you more or less have to memorise which verb matches which personal pronoun.<\/p><p>First,\u00a0<strong><em>we<\/em>,\u00a0<em>you<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0agree with<\/strong>\u00a0the \u201cnormal\u201d verbs again,\u00a0<strong><em>are<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>were<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in this case. Be careful here: this is one of the only times where the \u201cnormal\u201d plural verb is\u00a0<em>different<\/em>\u00a0than the \u201cnormal\u201d verb that would follow\u00a0<em>to<\/em>\u00a0in the infinitive construction. You will never see\u00a0<em>to were<\/em>; instead, the proper infinitive is\u00a0<em>to be<\/em>.<\/p><p>Second,\u00a0<strong><em>he<\/em>,\u00a0<em>she<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>it<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(plus\u00a0<em>they<\/em>\u00a0used as a singular\u2013again, ask your professor)\u00a0<strong>agree with<\/strong>\u00a0the \u201c<strong>singular<\/strong>\u201d verbs ending in\u00a0<strong>S:\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>was<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p><p>Third, our good friend\u00a0<strong><em>I<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(which we don\u2019t want to use too often outside of reflection papers)\u00a0<strong>agrees with\u00a0<em>am<\/em>\u00a0in the present tense and\u00a0<em>was<\/em>\u00a0in the past tense<\/strong>. Weird.<\/p><p>If you have trouble keeping these straight, try saying your sentence out loud. Many people who have difficulty with these rules in writing remember them more easily when speaking.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-90efbca e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"90efbca\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-831b653 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"831b653\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>Other Pronouns<\/h3><p>Most non-personal pronouns follow the same patterns as\u00a0<strong>singular<\/strong>\u00a0nouns, taking\u00a0<strong>singular<\/strong>\u00a0verbs (ending in\u00a0<strong>S<\/strong>), even if some do not \u201cfeel\u201d like they should be singular all the time. Some such pronouns include <em>whatever<\/em>, <em>everyone<\/em>, <em>nobody<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>everything<\/em>.
