and Establishing Information<\/span><\/h2><h3>Rule #1: Lists<\/h3><p>Use commas to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses written in a series or list.<\/p><p>Example: I drove home<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0cooked dinner<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0and got ready for the party.<\/p><h4>Note about the Oxford Comma\u00a0<\/h4><p>In a list, the final comma before the conjunction is known as the \u201cOxford comma\u201d, as in the phrase above: \u201ccooked dinner, and got ready for the party.\u201d This is an academically contentious comma. Some style guides and instructors will recommend going without, so the sentence in that case would read: \u201cI drove home, cooked dinner and got ready for the party.\u201d<\/p><p>Ultimately neither way is necessarily \u201cincorrect\u201d, and you as a writer are free to choose either! However, be consistent throughout your writing, and be sure to use your discretion about careful phrasing. As one author found out, there is a big difference between \u201cI\u2019d like to thank my parents, Ayn Rand and God\u201d and \u201cI\u2019d like to thank my parents, Ayn Rand, and God.\u201d<\/p><h3>Rule #2: Compound Sentences<\/h3><p>Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS): for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.<\/p><p>Example: He needed some cash<strong>, so<\/strong>\u00a0he went to the ATM.<\/p><h3>Rule #3: Establishing Information<\/h3><p>Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.<\/p><p>Example:\u00a0<strong>To be honest,<\/strong>\u00a0I didn\u2019t like the movie.<\/p><p>Example:\u00a0<strong>According to the Bible,<\/strong>\u00a0Joshua was the son of Nun.<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_progress_bar wpb_content_element\"><div class=\"vc_general vc_single_bar\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a5aa1a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a5aa1a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Your Turn: Test Your Understanding<\/span><\/h5><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>Think you have a grasp of the information above? Many people from\u00a0<strong>Frederick, Maryland,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alexandria, Virginia,<\/strong>\u00a0commute into the city to work every day.<\/p><p>Note: The year, abbreviation, and state names in the above sentence above count as extra information (See Rule #4).\u00a0Even if this information is critical to the meaning, we conventionally separate it from the rest of the sentence using commas specifically with dates and place names when two pieces of date or place information are used together. Without the year, the sentence would read: \u201c<strong>July 4<\/strong>\u00a0is known as the day America won independence\u201d, and without the date, the sentence would read: \u201c<strong>1776<\/strong>\u00a0is known as the year America won independence.\u201d These are both complete sentences.<\/p><p>The same goes for the following two sentences without the place modifiers: \u201c<strong>Washington<\/strong>\u00a0is the capital of the United States. Many people from\u00a0<strong>Frederick<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alexandria<\/strong>\u00a0commute into the city to work each day.\u201d Also consider: \u201c<strong>D.C.<\/strong>\u00a0is the capital of the United States. Be\u00a0sure not to add an extra comma between the final adjective and the noun itself or to use\u00a0commas with non-coordinate adjectives.<\/p><p>Coordinate adjectives are adjectives with equal (\u201cco\u201d-ordinate) status in describing the noun;\u00a0neither adjective is less than (subordinate to) the other. You can decide if two adjectives in a row\u00a0are coordinate by asking the following questions:<\/p><ul><li>Does the sentence make sense if the adjectives are written in reverse order?<\/li><li>Does the sentence make sense if the adjectives are written with\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0between them?<\/li><\/ul><p>If you answer yes to these questions, then the adjectives are coordinate and should be separated\u00a0by a comma. Here are some examples of coordinate and non-coordinate adjectives:<\/p><ul><li>Scrooge was a\u00a0<strong>cold, unfeeling<\/strong>\u00a0man. (coordinate: use a comma) Consider: \u201cScrooge was an\u00a0<strong>unfeeling, cold<\/strong>\u00a0man\u201d makes perfect sense.<\/li><li>He wore a large wool sweater. (non-coordinate: do not use a comma) Consider: \u201cHe wore a\u00a0<strong>wool, large<\/strong>\u00a0sweater\u201d sounds weird because \u201cwool\u201d tells us more about the sweater\u2019s basic properties than \u201clarge\u201d does.<\/li><li>The boys crawled into the\u00a0<strong>decrepit school<\/strong>\u00a0building. (non-coordinate: do\u00a0not use a comma) Consider: \u201cThe boys crawled into the\u00a0<strong>school, decrepit<\/strong>\u00a0building\u201d does not work at all because \u201cdecrepit\u201d does not tell us anything at all about the kind of building.<\/li><li>I winced at the\u00a0<strong>bright, piercing<\/strong>\u00a0light. (coordinate: use a comma) Consider: \u201cI winced at the\u00a0<strong>piercing, bright<\/strong>\u00a0light\u201d sounds fine.<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;font-family: Raleway,
