      Topic 1: How to identify a dangling modifier<\/span><\/h2>
      • What is a modifier?\u00a0<\/b>A modifier can be a word (mostly adjectives or adverbs), a phrase, or a clause that provides extra information about a part (usually nouns or verbs) in a sentence.<\/li><\/ul>

        <\/b>Example<\/p>

        The cat\u00a0with the black ears<\/i>\u00a0is stuck on the tree.<\/p>

        • What is a dangling modifier?\u00a0<\/b>It is a modifier that is placed in the sentence in a way that it is not clear which subject it modifies or lack thereof.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>

          Examples<\/p>

          The boy is trying to get in the building,\u00a0with a backpack<\/i>. (Here, it is not clear whether the boy is using the backpack to get into the building or is he just wearing one.)<\/p>

          The cat is stuck on a tree\u00a0with black ears<\/i>. (Here, placing the modifier \u201cwith black ears\u201d besides the \u201ctree\u201d and not the \u201ccat\u201d makes it confusing as to what it modifies.)\u00a0<\/p>

          Such mistakes can make your sentences unintentionally awkward and often a little bit funny.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
