Technological Awakening<\/h1>\n

This semester was <\/span>definitely one<\/span>\u00a0of a kind. As a student body we\u00a0<\/span>experimented<\/span>\u00a0with remote learning and the vast technological expanses the world has made. To me,\u00a0<\/span>this year<\/span>\u00a0was my technological awakening. I was always skeptical about online classes and\u00a0<\/span>online\u00a0<\/span>Writing Centre appointments, until the pandemic forced us<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0find human connection through our screens.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel extremely blessed that this technological awakening of mine was led by the Writing Centre. As a team of tutors, we were led by Ms. Emily Keery through workshops on Zoom, <\/span>Moodle<\/span>\u00a0and MS Teams. By the end of our workshops, I found my confidence\u00a0<\/span>in navigating through the online p<\/span>latforms<\/span>. When official appointments\u00a0<\/span>began,<\/span>\u00a0I found students struggling with technology<\/span>\u00a0as well<\/span>. Most of my sessions were spent navigating through Moodle or Zoom helping students get used to this \u2018new normal\u2019. Once they figured out the online platforms, they felt comfortable in the semester too. The students felt ready to take on this semester and so did I.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As an Embedded Tutor during this online semester, I noticed that my weekly meetings spread throughout the semester with some<\/span>\u00a0regular<\/span>\u00a0students<\/span>; this<\/span>\u00a0built our routines. It was something bot<\/span>h<\/span>\u00a0of us looked forward to during the week. We were able to gradually work towards our goals while not missing out on human connection during these unprecedented times. One of these students met with me every Monday morning and she would finish her appointment 5 min earlier\u00a0<\/span>in order to<\/span>\u00a0pray over my week.<\/span>\u00a0Even though she was struggling with technology, she was considerate and appreciative.<\/span>\u00a0This job helped me get through this semester.\u00a0<\/span>Not only was I practicing Active Listening but so were the students.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>It kept reminding me of the people beyond the screen. It saw me through tough\u00a0<\/span>days\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0it reassured me we<\/span>\u00a0were all in this together.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When I found myself getting comfortable in the online <\/span>space,<\/span>\u00a0I realised that my pedagogy had to change. We had training on Bloom\u2019s Taxonomy this semester that really helped\u00a0<\/span>me<\/span>\u00a0figure out the changes I needed to make to my sessions. I even got to create and review educational Quick Start Guides throughout the semester. As we belong to a generation of social media and instant gratification, videos needed to be shorter and explanations needed to be clearer<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>This job really prepped me for what seems like the future of education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This future needs humans<\/span>\u00a0to be increasingly techno savvy, and also be extremely humane. This semester taught me how to navigate this balance between being comfortable with technology but also seeing the person behind the screen. It was my technological awakening\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0a pedagogical revolution.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
