I saw the implementation and heard the comments, but also saw the exit of the device. It was mentioned by B121 in her post that, “Walmart has ended their Scan and Go app due to low customer participation (Peterson, 2018), I would suggest that the difference in success between these two companies was that Amazon seemed to have “employees [who] were particularly skillful in making sense of environmental context” (Malgeri, 2010, p. 40),” (B121, 2018).

I was a little concerned at one point when the device came out to see if the shoppers would have connected with the new technology. So while It was cited as low customer participation. I submit that it wasn’t around the area of skillful employees but more so on the premise of having customers who felt that the use of technology was isolating them (Hosale, 2013), from connecting with staff at the cash register. Most of the location I visited ran out of devices as the customers were willing to use the technology as it provided them with insightful information while shopping. While for other locations customers quarrel that the staff was being replaced by the technology (Smart, 2015), and so they chose not to use the unit. As a result, low usage resulted in the devices being pulled.

So in comparison to Amazon, the customers shopping are still the same ones using Walmart. However, the culture is different in both cases. Walmart may have needed to ensure they “maintain the momentum” (Ruch, 2017), which is one of the six steps for implementing a technology. This momentum required the process to be rolled out with the new “Scan to GO” devices and then someone to monitor the progress of the implementation from a specific location and based on the result a gradually integrate the device into other locations

###Reference

B.
