This is primarily because they believe they are already ethical (Thompson, 2007). The scripture site a similar issue we all struggle with, as Proverbs tells us, “the way of a fool seems right to them…” (Prov 12:15a). As such, Dov Seidman indicates he is against the approach of just trying to provide training and to embrace a higher burden of real education in ethics. (Thompson, 2007, pg. 79). This higher education comes with its own challenges. However, he sees training as more about helping persons to develop the skills needed to recognize the signs and to become more effective in resolving sensitive issues, how to wrestle with and struggle with dilemmas. (pg. 79).

Seidman feels that the history of ethical thought isn’t helpful as the framing is centered around ethical issues that have taken more of an approach that speaks of ethics from a noun perspective. This perspective creates a challenge for individuals as they end up operating in compartmentalized space of ethics, which creates a vacuum – where people end up having a tough time applying ethics (pg. 80).

However, Seidman asserts that the global economy can make organizations amoral. While I am of the views that organization are the ones who sometimes benefit from the amoral decision, these bad decisions are made by the individual. As an organization, the challenge is for its staff to work through what is right from what is wrong. There are times when this right and wrong are not so easily discernible (Thompson, 2007) and even feels uncomfortable. This pressure is perceived as the organization implement short-term profits. These profits are designed to push the staff, and when the process is changed to long-term, the ethical issues are sharply brought to the forefront as persons seek ways to make sure they achieve the price.

Working from the context of the church, the issue of being ethical should be a part of our DNA. The Bible indicates, “…old things have passed away, and below we have become new…” (2 Cor 5:17-19). Against this principle, we are on a quest to have our behavior modified to match what the biblical narrative outlines. Rom 12:2 reminds us that we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. We are required to take ownership of our actions. Thompson (2007), notes we have to emphasize a self-governing culture. (pg. 88). This cultures, demands of us to do the right thing as the impact of negativity and shame is not organizational but a betrayal of oneself. Thompson (2007) argues that at the core of the heart which drives value-based culture is the fact people honors themselves, and act on their own beliefs and don’t like cognitive dissonance.
