Northouse argues that “as a process, leadership can be observed in the leader behaviors (Jago, 1982) (p.7). I agree with him as the Bible reminds us that we are to “make disciples” (Matt 28:19 New International Version). The process of making disciples requires that we make someone that is a replica of us. It means that you can take anyone and guide them through the process.

“Power is the capacity or potential to influence”. (p.9). I would argue against this statement as power is not necessarily needed to influence but that we need to define the qualities that make up the power that we need to influence. According to Kellerman, “she argues that there has been a shift in leadership power” (p.g).

In an online article from CCL.org, “The Role of Power In Effective Leadership“. The strategy defined for leveraging power effectively is broken down into 12 areas. I will just mention a few “make the relationship a priority, don’t overplay your personal agenda, develop your brand of charisma, punish with purpose etc…” (http://www.ccl.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/roleOfPower.pdf).

I have always believed the power placed in our hands to guide lives, is not one that should be used or taken lightly. I use the motto “do unto others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31 NIV)

Within the context of the group, both leaders and followers need to understand they are apart of the process. Northouse (2018) builds on the idea, “it is important to address issues that confront followers as well as issues that confront the leader” (p. 15). There will be challenges on both sides of the fence that require us to have a place where you can share without feeling that you are not of value. So, if we are going to attain our goal, then leadership must be “adaptive and constructive” (p.13). Ephesian 4:11, “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers. (KJV). We are all gifted and the leader has to find a way to position the resources he or she has.

As an emergent leader within your organization. How would you respond to the assigned leadership who is not on the same page with you or what step would you take in addressing the issue?

Bal, Vudula.
