I can see this through how I think people of certain appearances are very pretty, and how I can sometimes get self-conscious about myself with things like acne, posture, looking tired and weight. I definitely do not struggle with this as much as some–and becoming confident in myself through mentorship and art has helped me move away from it–but I do have these biases created by cultural ideals.

Views of beauty shift alongside fashion and beliefs of a people group.

In countries with less food, an ideal body might be one that is fertile and well-nourished.

“Doryphoros” of the fifth-century BC displays muscular, athletic body proportions.

There is also a tradition of painting “the reclining nude,” which is a “perfectly beautiful female body in repose, submissive and subjected to the unchallenged gaze” (14).

My thoughts: I very much do not like the idea of this in some ways. It feels like the model is just being used and taken advantage of. I do like how they feel bold to show their body, but it can feel like the purpose is for viewers to take from the model and almost dehumanize them through objectification. This is especially the case for models who appear forcedly vulnerable or weak in comparison to paintings of strong naked people or goddesses. I also don’t like that so many naked models seem to be female. I know that females are thought of as beautiful, so this contributes to the reality, but it would disturb me less if the art of genders was more even.

In the 19th-century, artists explored urban life instead of only this perfect figure. They might draw a woman in the bath or a prostitute instead of a goddess or martyr.

I do like how this is more authentic and shows realistic expectations of life and there’s beauty in the naturalness, but I still do not like how it is exposing women’s bodies and more than men.

20th-century artists challenged the perception of beauty further by representing the poor, people of minority groups and women more. Now the reclining nude paintings could be male. Feminist artists undermined the representation of female bodies as “beautiful objects for the male gaze” and challenged patriarchy.

Bodies are represented more inclusively today, and artists challenged ideals with physical beauty in an age of makeup and cosmetic surgery, etc. Art now challenges the culture more than it mirrors what already exists.

What does beauty mean to you?

I see a lot of beauty in natural and free things. I also like novel angles, interesting lighting, and things I haven’t seen before. I often find myself wanting to compliment people about the lighting on their faces, but it turns into an awkward and funny situation sometimes. This of course depends on who I am talking to.

I also find beauty in imperfection. I enjoy listening to music that has the singer laugh at the end about a small mistake, and the instruments and voice are trained, but also sound raw and unfiltered. I find my friend’s posts on social media that totally express her character gorgeous as well. She photographs simple whimsical things that bring her joy, like bright yellow socks in a grassy field and her friends smiling in flower headbands. I also love how she notices pretty things with sunlight.

I also find happiness, twinkling eyes, unashamed laughter and vulnerable poetry boldly shared very beautiful. I like it when people seem to be free, not hiding behind any internal masks. I think this is because it feels like these people have sort of given me “access” to their souls instead of hiding behind thick makeup, normalcy, forced stillness, filters and seriousness. These things are not bad in themselves, but I don’t like it when they exist because someone is afraid of being who they are.

Body of Art — Beauty Summary (p. 14-15) “Beauty” is generally determined by values learned in a given cultural context, so it often differs from society to society….

[41,43

post-589","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-art211","category-read
["GET
