I wonder if this teaching style is what the textbook explains.

The students are learning percentages. They are learning on number lines–which I do understand well–but I would naturally be drawn to creating pie charts or drawing shapes as examples in this type of class. It seemed like students only learned on number lines and the teacher explained that way until they got the answer. I did not notice her change the teaching style to reflect their learning preference, but I was only there for a short time and I did not hear everything she said as I was working with other students.

I noticed again today that my mentor teacher has students verbally repeat facts. Today they all responded to her: “Forty-five times two is ninety.”

She called out students in front of the class again today to prevent interrupting.

Reflections

Learning from number lines reflects my visual and tactile understanding of math. I found this difference interesting, but I think both learning styles are good and helpful in explaining percentages. I found it helpful to join the class by teaching with a different method because it gave confused students I worked with a new lens through which to look at problems.

I think verbally stating and having students repeat facts helps students familiarize their minds with difficult-to-memorize equations. It strengthens their mental math abilities.

Something I noticed about her response to misbehaviour today is that it might increase bullying. When she calls out students’ names as they misbehave, I heard some students tease their classmates. To be fair, the teacher also spoke against this teasing to the students, but I wonder if teasing might continue outside of the classroom. This management method effectively gets students to be quiet in class, but I don’t know if it is good for their egos or social lives. Students called out may have challenges with friendships. I think this teaching style aligns with Seganti’s method somewhat because he does not tolerate misbehaviour and will speak against it directly and immediately in front of the whole class, obtaining respect because students know not to challenge him.

February 21, 2023 (P1) Observations The class studied math again today.
