Community Engagement
Art and Design practices do not happen in a vacuum. The community formed in this course will help you to sustain your practice and a creative life this year and far beyond. Learners are encouraged to actively build creative community within and beyond the classroom.
Active Participation
Student leadership and initiative is at the core of this course. Students are expected to come to class meetings prepared, having read the required readings and completed their artistic work. Each voice is necessary to the functioning of the group. All learners are expected to participate in large and small group discussion regarding critiques and readings. Participation will take the form of group discussions and oral and written feedback on colleagues’ work.
Culture Care Reflection
Each class we will begin with a short student-led reflection on the Art & Fear text. Each learner will be assigned to two sections to facilitate discussion on.
Prepare a few slides to accompany your presentation to help the visual learners engage with your presentation + questions. Reflection should include the following:
- Read and take notes on the section
- Discuss one important take away from the chapter—create a slide with one important quotation from the chapter
- Choose one question from the discussion guide at the end of the book to share with the class
- Prepare your response to the question, connecting it to your learning from the chapter and your own life
- Facilitate the group conversation through asking questions, responding to participants answers and inviting participants to share
Vancouver Gallery Visit
In lieu of one of our class meetings the class will meet in Vancouver to visit a number of East Vancouver galleries. The purpose of the day is to build community and connection amongst learners and to introduce learners to the broader community of artists and arts institutions in the Vancouver area.
Each learner will submit a photo journal of the day including at least two photos from each gallery we visited. Post this to your blog.
