In Every Storm, God is With Us

But, even in this season, which felt like endless waves of disappointments and setbacks, God continued to show up.

When we find ourselves in one of life’s many storms, it is hard to remind ourselves of God’s promise to never leave us. When we feel waves of disappointment, uncertainty or fear crashing around us, His promise to be with us can anchor us.

In my own life, I have seen the promise of God with me, time and time again. God never abandons me but walks with me through every challenging season. In the book of Isaiah, God outlines this promise to us:

“So do not fear, for I am with you;

do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you;

I will uphold you with my righteous right

hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NIV)

Growing up, I competed at the provincial and national level for synchronized swimming; after 8 years of synchronized swimming, I developed a hip injury.

At age 11, I began spending week after week with different sports medicine specialists, physiotherapists, and chiropractors, trying to figure out what was wrong.

This meant I had to leave the sport I loved because my body would no longer allow me to do it.

I was still swimming, but it was racing, not synchro. I was still in pain and I did not have an answer to why. It took four years to get a formal diagnosis for what had now become chronic hip pain, and after two hip surgeries and one knee surgery, it became clear that I had incurable chronic pain in my SI joint.

But, even in this season, which felt like endless waves of disappointments and setbacks, God continued to show up. After each surgery, I was reminded of the presence of God through the people He placed in my life. There were countless meals brought to my home, visits with friends, and the overwhelming feeling that I was not alone.

God reveals himself differently to each one of us, depending on our needs, but the promise remains true for us all.

He will never leave us, and He is always with us.

In my storm, God was reminding me,

“My precious child,

I love you and I would never leave you.

During your times of trial and suffering,

when you see only one set of footprints,

it was then that I carried you” (Footprints in the Sand)

God is with us. He is our anchor, guiding us through any storm that may come our way; and when the storm feels more than we can bear, He carries us through.
