Hi everyone, I am Thompson from Wenzhou, China. I am a second year Computer Science student at TWU. I am taking this course because it is one of my core course and I hope that my appreciation of art and my eye for beauty will be enhanced.
1. How did the videos challenge your ideas about art and drawing?
I quite agree with Ralph Armer that painting is not meant to be a work of art, painting has many other functions that can help us become better. Painting is also the first language we master. Before everyone learns to express complex sentences, the time is ripe for them to express with a brush. When they grow up, for whatever reason, most people stop picking up a pen. Painting is the only creative hobby we leave behind as we grow older. We are taught that painting is a gift from God to some people that we ordinary people will never learn. Painting is really a great thing, it brings us a lot of benefits, this video has changed my view of painting and art.
2. How could drawing or thinking like an artist help you in your daily life?
Drawing plays an important role in our lives and helps us in different ways. For example, drawing helps us remember the good things, the people we meet, the things that pass by in life but that you want to remember. You can choose to draw these things, unlike writing them down, drawing is easier to understand and clearer than words. Drawing helps me design new and innovative things, and it will express the ideas in my head clearly. I think if I record the new and strange things in my life every day and then put these drawings together, it is the best art work. Maybe words can’t express our imagination and creativity well, but painting can. Drawing gives a direct visual impact, for example, we combine what our friend likes with his habits, which is a great gift. Painting is really helpful in life, we don’t need to be talented or artistic to paint, anyone can create a world with a brush.
3. What is one specific area mentioned in the videos that you would like to grow in during this class?
I want to expand the field of imagination in this class. I want to combine two ideas in my head into one new thing by practicing drawing in this class. Sometimes I will have some faint inspiration, but I don’t know how I should express it through art or painting. For example, when I was designing covers and pictures for my software, I didn’t know how to assign them the position and color. I also don’t know how to arrange the various patterns to make my whole design look attractive. So I can use the skills and knowledge I have learned in this class to achieve what I want. I think drawing still needs constant practice and familiarity to make my ideas clearer, so I hope to develop that knowledge in this class.
