Concentration:
You focus on your studies without distractions getting in the way.
THIS SKILL IS GOOD TO PRIORITIZE IF…
You are easily distracted and find yourself unable to focus on your studies – whether in class, reading, writing, preparing for assignments.
You know that you can concentrate on some things but academic work seems different.
You are putting in a lot of time for your studies but you finish lectures and readings without feeling like you really understand what is going on.
You really struggle to concentrate at certain times of the day and in certain environments but other people seem to work fine.
You are motivated to study but you worry that you will not be good enough.
STEP 1: WATCH THIS!
STEP 2: TRY THIS!
Deep Work
- Have 1-2 spaces to study without distraction.
- Put your phone on airplane mode to block notifications.
- Focus on the process – what is the first right step to approach your assignment or studying?
Pomodoro Technique
- Study for 25 min on ONE thing only. Don’t deviate.
- Take a 5 min break
- Chose another topic. Focus!
- Repeat 4 times then take a 15 – 20 min. break
- Repeat!
Actively Engage
- Live as if what your learning really matters!
- Take notes during a lecture, ask questions, participate in discussions or read your textbook out loud.
- Test yourself on course materials.
STEP 3: MAKE THIS A HABIT – SOME IDEAS TO GET YOU STARTED
1
Have a daily routine – good sleep, good food and consistent study times – short and often
2
Experiment with different places where you can do your best work
3
At the start with each week, list out your most important tasks – identify the most important ones
4
Each day decide on your 1-3 goals for the day and then get started – even if for 5 minutes.
5
Every week set times when you’re not thinkig about your studies – time just for you!
Congratulations!
