Test Strategies

TEST STRATEGIES:

Your approach towards preparing for test and exams to demonstrate your learning.

THIS SKILL IS GOOD TO PRIORITIZE IF…

You worry about tests or tell yourself that you are not good at taking tests.

You find that you arrive at tests without being prepared.

You get into an test situation and freeze.

You don’t understand why you did badly in a test.

You take bad grades very personally.

STEP 1: WATCH THIS!

STEP 2: TRY THIS!

Start Early

  • Put all your tests/exam dates in a calendar and create a study plan for each.
  • Find out the format of your exam.
  • Start or join a Study Group to keep you focused.

Mind The Gaps

  • Create study notes/cards, charts, mnemonics, mind maps.
  • Focus your studying on what you don’t know.
  • Create a “Cheat Sheet” – a summary of the most important topics.

Solo & Team

  • On your own – Turn the main ideas from your class notes/readings into practice questions for a test.
  • With others – get answers to your questions and practice teaching each other key concepts

STEP 3: MAKE THIS A HABIT – SOME IDEAS TO GET YOU STARTED

1

Test yourself every day on one of your courses.
Take a topic and imagine you have to explain it to a friend

2

Answer the chapter questions in your textbooks. If there aren’t any – make up your own.

3

Sleep! Your brain learns while you are sleeping!

4

Focus on the process of learning the material and not on the grade you need.

5

Review your notes each day to ensure you understand what you’re learning.
Look at them again a day or so later.
Test yourself as to what you can remember.

6

Create a pre-test exam ritual.
Eat properly, review notes, get supplies, avoid anxious others, and breathe!
