I have not been so involved in research based works until six years ago when I founded the LEAH Foundation, most of our programs have been hinged on outcomes of research / need assessment.
My personal experiences are hereby highlighted as follows:
1. Informed Decision Making – outcomes of findings have always helped me to take decisions based on an informed perspective and has guided my actions.
2. Ability to discern – Researching into a particular issue that sometimes become a program under my foundation has helped me to put into proper context causative factors and the approach to solutions.
3. Insightful knowledge – Through research on issues and subjects, I get to have insightful knowledge.
As part of our health services intervention program at the LEAH Foundation, we started the cancer project which was actually value based. But as the project took off with a massive sensitization exercise that took me and my team to almost all the LGAs in Kwara State, the level of the people’s apathy to screening/check for Breast or Cervical cancer dawned on me and I took the decision to set up Basic Screening Centres across the state. This decision could be said to be based on research because it was the outcome of on-field assessment.
Decision Justification
The decision to set up the basic screening centres was based on the following:
1. Breast and cervical cancer incidence – Breast and cervical cancers incidences have been on the rise as they are adjudged to be the commonest cancers that affect women in Nigeria. Daily, lives are lost and so something has to be done to arrest the ugly trend.
2. Ignorance – There seemed to be a very low level of awareness amongst the women folk on the prevalence of these diseases. Even educated women are either not informed or well informed.
3. Lack of screening facilities – There were no dedicated screening facilities in either private or government health institutions for breast or cervical cancer screening.
