Learning Activity 4: Blog Post 2
Northouse defined “assigned leadership vs Emergent leaders” has, “the one who has a formal position vs the other where it is how the members of the team respond to them.” (2018,p.8)
Having gone back and forth with outlining the similarities of leadership and management. Northouse brings the primary function to the front when he said, “management is to provide order and consistency to organizations, whereas leadership is about producing change and movement. In his words, “seeking order and stability; vs adaptive and constructive change” (p.12).
The challenge is that management look at the process of counting value while leadership is looking at creating values. In the latter part of Northouse work on leadership vs Management. The debate is really about what you are expecting as the final result and what the team unearths as value. “Management is trained to think short-term and extrinsically, while leadership is the opposite. He went on further to say, when management is involved in influencing a group, they are involved in leadership. When leaders are involved in planning etc…, they are involved in management”. (p.14)
I worked in the IT department of the bank, and we had some leadership changes. I was called into a meeting with my new manager for a general conversation and overview of the department. At the end of the conversation, he said congratulations you are now the new supervisor. I questioned him and was told that the team felt that I was the right candidate to take up the role.
