Welcome to the course hub for Leadership 500, Leadership Foundations.
In this introductory course, many of the foundations for understanding leadership throughout the MA in Leadership and Educational Leadership programs will be introduced including essential philosophies and theories of leadership. Second, it will examine and evaluate the historical models, Jesus’ leadership, self- awareness as a leader, the leader’s role and influence along with personal and professional leadership skill development. Third, the course will engage participants in an overview of vital leadership topics, challenge students to think critically about Transformational Servant Leadership, and support practical application of learning through individual and group activities and assignments.
Defining Leadership Unit 1
In this first unit a ‘big picture’ view of leadership is introduced. There is a focus on Transformational Servant Leadership and the personal competencies we need to hone to improve leadership.

Themes, Theories, and Concepts Unit 2
In week two our focus will be on historical and current models of leadership theory and practice to build competency in adaptability and change. Examining the roles of essential leadership, framework of assessing leadership, the role of innate qualities and characteristics in how they are integrated appropriately in leadership practices.

Values-Based Leadership and Critical Thinking Unit 3
A huge amount of learning takes place in a social context. Have you ever thought of the possibility that online students who feel socially comfortable rather than isolated, exhibit higher order skills in analysis and synthesis more frequently than in face to face settings? It is possible and this online group is proof of that! Have you noticed deep thinking during this course? Encouragement of others? Active, polite and professional learning discussion? If so, carry on! If you’d like to see more, make a conscious effort yourself to exhibit those qualities and skills.

Transformative and Servant Leadership Unit 4
Unit 4 focuses on understanding that the extent to which the leader is able to shift the primary focus of leadership from the organization to the follower is the distinguishing factor in classifying leaders as either transformational or servant leaders.

In Unit 5, Team Leadership, our focus looks at both the internal and external actions of an effective team and requirements of leadership as partnership.

This unit is about how a leader supports personal development of followers. This assumes acknowledging that individuals are valuable and it is a good idea to invest time and resources in them.

Leadership Ethics Unit 7
In Unit 7 we turn our attention to an integrated approach in looking at issues that arise in leadership situations, while addressing the principles of ethical leadership, perspectives of ethical leadership from a value-based transformational servant leadership approach.
