Community Engagement
Art and Design practices do not happen in a vacuum. The community formed in this course will help you to sustain your practice and a creative life this year and far beyond. Learners are encouraged to actively build creative community within and beyond the classroom.
Active Engagement
Student leadership and initiative is at the core of this course. Students are expected to come to class meetings prepared, having read the required readings and completed their artistic work. Each voice is necessary to the functioning of the group. All learners are expected to participate in large and small group discussion regarding critiques and readings. Participation will take the form of group discussions and oral and written feedback on colleagues’ work.
Assessment:
- Engagement and Active Listening: Learner is attentive to colleagues and demonstrates active listening through eye contact and body language. Phones and computers are only used when appropriate.
- Collaboration: Learners share the airwaves equitably. No one group member dominates or withdraws.
- Quality of Input: Learners seek to provide thoughtful, kind and constructive feedback.
Art & Fear Reflection
Each class we will begin with a short student-led reflection on the Art & Fear text. Each learner will be assigned to one week’s reading and will prepare a 10 min reflection. Sign up for a presentation on Teams.
Prepare a few slides to accompany your presentation to help the visual learners engage with your presentation + questions. Reflection should include the following:
- Share a short passage from the week’s assigned reading (slide 1)
- Outline the main points covered in the chapter. How does the passage connect to the chapter as a whole? (slide 2)
- How does the passage connect to your experience? Share a specific
- Pose a question to the class for reflection. This should be an open-ended question to start discussion. (slide 3)
Assessment:
- Key Concept: Chosen passage or passages capture a key concept from the assigned reading. Presenter demonstrates connection between chosen passage and chapter.
- Connection to Experience: Demonstrates deep understanding and personal engagement with the reading.
- Question: Poses an engaging, open-ended question to the class that gets discussion going!
Vancouver Gallery Visit
In lieu of one of our class meetings the class will meet in Vancouver to visit a number of East Vancouver galleries. The purpose of the day is to build community and connection amongst learners and to introduce learners to the broader community of artists and arts institutions in the Vancouver area. Each learner will submit a photo journal of the day.
The Photo Journal may take the form of an instagram or blog post. Journal should include:
- two photos from each site we visited
- total of 10 photos minimum
All photos should be taken by you!
