Invictus Assignment

For the first time I have watched such a tremendous and encouraging story in a movie because I usually watch action movies more but with a such great leadership lesson it is amazing to know that how can a comman man who was once a prisoner became president of South Africa and how he was able to unite the whole country with a game, his approach is so well satisfied. The whole story revolves around leadership and unity.

According to me, I found some of the key lessons as stated below :

  1. One game One country – This is a logo stated in the movie saying and promoting how can a game helps in uniting the country and the power of unity. It is not the matter of fact we usually bias on stereotypes however, we all have the same body structure. It is very necessary for a leader to be unbiased for any move he takes for the welfare of organisation. He should know and always realize the importance of working as a team in a unity. There is a video on you tube showing power of unity explains everything in itself about its importance. In the movie Nelson Mandela has made a very nice move of uniting a new republic country, there is always a big difference between rich and poor and many more, but thinking of a very different way that is a game as described in the movie is very appreciable and  the best move for making a whole new different country. As, in the movie a game converts a country from segregation to integration.

2. The taste of defeat– It is very necessary for a person to be successful to first experience defeat, a fall in life which can make a man more aggressive for his goal to achieve and more focused. Only a person who tasted loss and defeat knows how it feels and what it takes to lose something and why victory is of so much importance.  So, losing does not mean a man had lost rather it gives strength and courage to rise again with full enthusiasm to attain victory.

3. External support– Not necessarily but if a man has external support, it is a bit less tough to achieve and yeah for a leader to lead an organisation it is always a helping hand, as shown in the movie how the president help rugby players and the captain and encourage him to achieve. However, he had something else in his mind through game that is unity but still he helped a lot and the outcome is what we saw at the end of movie was victory and glory.

  1. I enjoyed your honest comment about enjoying action movies and finding one that is based on history to be so tremendous and satisfying. There are definitely real life hero’s in this movie. Amazing how sport can imitate life and life be played out in sport. I agree with your thoughts that losing at something isn’t a bad thing. It can redirect someone’s energy and passions to try harder the next time as it ‘gives strength and courage to rise again with full enthusiasm to attain victory.’ Your third point, do you feel it was a sweeter victory because there were other’s involved and supported the overall goal of the team to win at such a highly visible event? These days in children’s soccer there is a trend toward not keeping score so it is more about participation. Do you support this trend?

    1. Thank you so much for this amazing reply and appreciating me. Yes I think it was not only a victory of few people who were playing out there but a victory of whole country and a victory of new integrated country which was a sweeter one. I want to mention it is really not necessary at all to just win a game or to lose one, the first biggest step is to participate in it and be a part of it. Even it takes a lot of courage to even chose a sport and participating in it, so, yes i support the trend of participating not winning always.
