Ryan’s Question: In a small organization, is it possible for the same person to effectively hold both positions?
In a small organization, I would say, yes, it is possible for the same person to effectively hold both positions. That being said, I think that this is the exception and not the norm.
In small organizations, there is generally a greater amount of interaction between the management and staff so the example I have in mind is of a supervisor/owner that displays strong leadership qualities. I think a person like that would be able to hold both positions, one as the supervisor and show care, compassion and understanding as a leader when dealing with the staff. I feel that this type of scenario is the most common example.
In comparison, a worker who is a strong leader can possess the ability to carry out management responsibilities, however, in a smaller organization might not get the chance, unless actually promoted to a supervisor role. The strong leader might be able to elevate the people around him, but they wouldn’t have as much of an impact as the supervisor who also displays good leadership.
