Its all about the light

‘How are we becoming better photographers’ – It was a quick photography 101 for me  !

I tried the techniques  ‘ show me the light’ , ‘ great foreground on a great back ground ‘ and ‘better contrast .. ‘

I also tried to compose a picture in my mind before I captured it – he kinda obliged , not entirely though !

I wanted to place him in the middle of the halo from the overhead light . His white and lightbrown coat contrasts amazingly with the dark brown floor .

Sunny day in White Rock

I decided to convert my weekend morning walk into Photo Safari . I could not take a specific picture to demonstrate start or finish time , it was in the morning around 9 am . My walking route typically takes me down a steep hill to White Rock beach, and then back up. The walk itself is an exhilarating experience, one because I get to do it only the weekends, and second because it takes me through this changing landscape d own to the sea . My words cant do it justice.

Today was especially enlightening, because I wasn’t just a casual observer but was a photographer ! I was looking at the usual things in a different perspective

Interesting ..never seen this before. Don’t know what it means

This definitely does not belong here..

Converging lines .. undulating lines …

Interesting.. how does a tree become this ?

My dog’s freshly roomed paw 🙂

Issues I had with this activity – I was trying to copy a folder , did not happen.  I learnt that you can only copy them one by one

For the life of my I cannot understand why all my photos are displayed sideways!! All my attempts to make them upright went waste.  I apologise for the ‘ pain in the neck ‘

Funny …

I don’t usually do a whole lot of internet surfing as a general practice- it has mostly to do with time constraints.

I tried to be a little bit more active ‘surfer ‘ for the purpose of this activity . Because of the recent world events, mostly the UN meeting , I have been looking up news on CNN. I did also surf MSN , and did some online shopping 🙂

Interestingly , CNN was the one that had the most ‘ third party sites’ attached to it. I don’t know if this is what the purpose of this activity was , is ‘ tracker ‘ and ‘third party site ‘ the same thing? I hope Colin can throw some light on this.

Facebook did not attract much attention for some reason ( ?! )

Scary email…

To check the authenticity of the email, I would first apply the strategies mentioned in Michael Caulfield’s guide.  First of all I would try and find if any other searches of this kind have been done by one of the numerous reliable sites mentioned in his book. I would then try to ‘ go upstream’ and trace the source of the email. ‘ Highlight’ and ‘ right click’ in chrome seems like a very versatile tool ; I would apply that to certain key phrases in the text .

The email does seem sketchy. One of the first things that stands out is the tone – dramatic and scandalizing , meant to scare .  There are also spelling and grammatical mistakes, seems like its written in a hurry . The language is very ‘ lay ‘ , without the technical terms or specifics that one would expect from the CDC .

I did know that the Manheim institute was a part of the CDC

Hmmm! What am I doing wrong ?

For this activity I literally went by the book . I went through the two articles, and the strategies made sense- until I started trying to apply them to my search .

Out of three activities, the one I had most success with was finding PDFs related to my field, which is medicine ( no surprises there , maybe its because I am familiar with the terms and the search strategies)

I tried to research articles about leadership , sourced form Canadian Universities. I could not figure out how to combine the 2 strategies- ‘ loc: ‘ and ‘ac:’

I tried site:ac.ca ( ‘ca’ presumably for Canada) , without success.

As for the ‘podcast’ activity – as far as google is concerned , there is only one Surrey , and that is in UK !

As for my home town- did not find podcasts from there . I am researching on how to combine more than one of the strategies mentioned in the tutorial. I would appreciate if someone more knowledgeable could share their experiences /success

All Business

Here’s a third party narrative of what I found about myself on most of the search engines:

“ Dr Simarjit Shergill is a Geriatrics doctor in Bellingham . Washington . She is affiliated with Peacehealth St Josephs Medical Center.  As a Geriatrician Dr Simarjit Shergill is trained to care for aging adults, who often require specialized treatment plans or procedures .

Dr. Shergill received her medical degree from Government Medical College, in Amritsar, India. She completed an internal medicine residency at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in New York.

Dr. Shergill went on to complete a geriatric medicine fellowship at Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University, where she trained in both inpatient and outpatient management of medical conditions in the elderly. She also gained experience caring for patients in long-term care facilities, including nursing homes and rehabilitation institutes. She is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine.

I wasn’t able to find an infamous person with my name; perhaps because it is not a very common name. There were other people on Facebook with the same name, but I did not dig into their profiles out of respect for their privacy . My preliminary search did not reveal embarrassing pictures of myself. I have an anecdotal incident regarding the same– a few months ago a friend posted a video of a group of us dancing at a private party. I discovered the video the next day, and asked her to remove it, to which she graciously agreed .

The first search page mostly showed me in a professional capacity from various medicine related websites, and of course Facebook and LinkedIn . I do not have an Instagram account .

Out of Bonnie’s proposed ‘ selves’ , I could not connect with one particular ‘self’ . I do believe that there might be traces of more than one ‘self’ in any individual.

I do not self censor  ( at least never had to so far , thankfully ) . I do not and have not removed content because of concerns about how it would reflect on my online identity. I do admit that I am very conscious of what I post online, for the exactly the same reason .

I can do this !

I have faced many challenges in both my personal and professional life , and overcame quite a few of them ( not all , no way !!) Its been quite a journey, from India to Canada, via New York and Detroit .
Along the way I have acquired few qualities and attributes of a leader; hope to acquire the skills from this program . Look forward to working with the excellent faculty and all my peers who are embarking on this journey with me .
Have a great weekend !
