Topic: Creative writing activity about fall
Do a call and response to get the attention of the class.
Hello everyone! It’s October, so today we’re going to learn about the Fall! To begin the day, we will have a little creative writing activity. In this activity, I will give you a prompt and you will have five minutes to write a short story or scene based on it. When we are done, a few volunteers can read their stories to the class.
In your story, you should have a plot. Does anyone remember the parts of a plot? Have students raise their hands to guess the aspects like beginning, conflict, resolution, etc. If they miss any parts, tell them, then write the parts of the story on the whiteboard with a plot diagram.
As you write this story, focus on writing the storyline quickly. The grammar and spelling are less important for this activity because once the time is up, your pens have to come off the page. You can correct the grammar later on if you would like to. Explain rules about topics and words that are inappropriate for this assignment.
Before you begin, I will read you my own story as an example.
Read your story animatedly as an example.
Now take out your notebooks and a pen quietly. When you are ready, put your hands on your head.
Once they are all ready, ask if there are any questions. Answer them, then say the writing prompt (something related to Fall.) Get them to keep their hands on their heads until it’s time to start, count down from three and say “Go!”
Once the five minutes for writing are up, a timer will go off. Pencils up!
Give the students two minutes to read their stories to a partner, then ask for volunteers to read their stories to the class. Give the students feedback on one thing we liked about the story and one thing that could be improved.
