  1. Riley, it looks like you have here a number of very successful ‘verb’ explorations following Richard Serra’s verb list. The thumbnail size is so small that it is hard to see what you have done. Look for and click ‘larger’ often displayed on the lower right panel when you are in the media library. The other thing to look for is autofullwidth, and only 1 column if you are given a choice. To dig is a particularly successful balance between expressive marks and sparse surface and precise placement.

  2. Your 3 small scale experiments look excellent. Which photo is your large-scale abstract drawing? is it the drawing which includes colour, second to the end? This piece looks like a good start but the surface is thin-not yet a substantial, refined, finished abstract, “analogue of activity” composition. But it is hard to say since the photo is a thumbnail, and it is so small. This larger drawing is to be something that represents substantial work rather than a quick experiment. Aim for fully worked, multilayered surfaces in response to your verb, surfaces that are really pushed and worked so that the whole surface becomes a unity-like a skin.

Please bring this piece with you to class after the Spring break and include it in the critique. Post it larger and include the size.

Your artist statement is missing. Statements generally situate a work within a tradition and indicate some of the background research, inspiration, thematic content to create a textual bridge for the intelligent viewer. They normally are succinct statements that are informed by research, might include quotes, reference a theorist/theory, and indicate what you were trying to contribute to this tradition. When you write your artist statement remember to make reference to the drawing theory, use quotes, cite theorists, include research. Imagine that your large composition and your statements would be something that could hang in a public art gallery. Write to that level and audience. Aim for that kind of quality in your work as well.
