Response to Layla’s response to Marcelo.
Hi Layla!
I believe you are doing an excellent job at attempting to implement a TSL model in a hesitant culture. I am currently reading a book for another course called, You Are What You Love by James Smith. In this book, Smith (2016) writes “Our wants and longings and desires are at the core of our identity, the wellspring from which our actions and behavior flow. Our wants reverberate from our heart, the epicenter of the human person” (Smith, 2016, p. ). Smith is saying that what you love guides you in your actions and beliefs and I believe you are doing just that.
In terms of your question, “I am wondering if you have other practices which can help students understand the significance of being transformational servant leadership?” (Zehang, 2018), I think the most important thing that you can do in your current position is to demonstrate some of the core qualities of TSL. When the people in your organization see you modeling these skills, they will be inspired and may be more willing to see a TSL model being implemented. Some of these qualities, as outlined in the TWU monograph (2018), include listening, showing empathy, building others up by encouraging skill development, building a positive culture and community, and a commitment to the growth of the people. (Imbenzi, Williaume & Page 2013, p. 11-13).
I wish you good luck and pray that God will give you the strength and encouragement that you need to persevere.
“Servant-leaders aspire to be great only in their service to others. They are committed to serving others with integrity; humility; sincere concern; a generous, forgiving and giving heart; and self-discipline. They relate to others by investing, empowering, caring for, and consulting others.” (Imbenzi, Williaume & Page, 2013, p.1).
